Glasses
« on: July 08, 2014, 06:38:51 PM »
I sometimes use reading glasses to be able to clearly see small writing within 1-2 ft from my eyes.  My vision past that is excellent.  Is it a bad idea to keep reading glasses in my pocket so I can easily read my card where I have to record fouls, timeouts and other items?

The problem I had with readers is they get moisture and heat via transfer from your shirt pocket.  When you pull them out, they get exposed to cooler ambient air and fog. The fog dissipates about the time the timeout is over.

I wound up having a pair of my Oakley sunglasses (Flak Jacket) modified with clear lenses.  I now have a nice set of Nike frames I wear.

I am to the point that readers wouldn't work too well.

I keep my readers in my shirt pocket on the t-shirt that I wear under my stripes. That way it doesn't fall out and is generally not noticeable. I only pull them out when it is absolutely necessary to read something.

Either wear them all the time or never.  Switching gives anyone watching the game pause whenever you make a call....

Why call attention to the glasses.  Most folks think we're blind to start with.

Sorry, but readers hurt distance vision, you can't have them on except for reading and I am not reading any small print without them. My grey hair explains to most people the need for reading glasses. I don't need them often on the field, but there is an occasion so I have them on hand.

Remember, guys, if you pull out glasses to read; you may prompt an observant fan to respond : "No wonder the ref missed that call....he didn't have his glasses on!" :)

Possible alternatives : (1) Don't wear glasses when you write on your game card, then you won't need
                                    glasses to read your writing.

                                (2) If a coach says : "Check the rule book" >:(; you can respond.....

                                     (a) "Coach, I AM the rule book" if you feel sure,

                                                            or,

                                     (b) Have U sNiCkErS carry and search the rule book ,if necessary.

I have to disagree, Ralph. This is exactly the kind of "wise-guy" response that will get you in trouble.

If a coach SAYS: "Check the rule book!", he probably deserves a flag.

If a coach ASKS: "Could you check the rule book?", that's a different issue, and deserves a polite response.

There's simply no need for any coach to ask a Referee to check the Rule Book.  If the coach disagrees with, or doesn't understand a referee's decision, NFHS 3-5-11 provides an opportunity to request a TO to review a decision,"which may have resulted from the misapplication or misinterpretation of a rule".  If the coach's concern is verified, the appropriate change is made and, appropriate parties notified, and the time out will be an official's TO. When the initial decision is verified, the team requesting the discussion will be charged at TO.

And exactly how is it going to be verified?  Some states require the crew to carry a rule book, although most of them keep it in a sideline bag.

Crew awards an automatic first down on a DPI.  As the defensive coach, I call time out and politely say that the rule was changed a year ago.  R checks with his crew and they all agree, yep, it's an automatic first down.  There is NOTHING wrong with me politely asking them to check a rule book (and yes, we have one on the bench if they would like to borrow it).  I would NEVER pull it out and try to show them something.  I might ASK if I could show them the rule.  Should they refuse and still rule incorrectly, then it's an issue we have to report.  And that's the kind of mistake that costs crews playoff games.

Seems to me checking the book and getting it corrected might be the better path.

I posted it tongue in cheek :P , I've had coaches ask : "Are you sure??" and I've responded : "I'm 100% sure." "Please" and "thank you" are three underused words by all involved in the game and when used, can often defuse a debate. Only once did a coach (assistant) pull out a rule book. We played an untimed down at the end of the first half when time expired before A could get a play off after an accepted live ball foul. A then kicked a FG. At halftime B's assist. coach came running over, his head spinning around like the little girl on The Exorcist, with a rule book >:( and demanded : "SHOW ME THAT IN THE RULE BOOK >:( >:(". It was in the early 2000's, and I was on the Football Editorial Committee, I took  his rule book ,opened it to the page of FEC pictures, pointed to my picture and stated "That's the rule". He grunted and left - I was rude, but his rudeness brought it on. nAnA. Had he said "Please", I would have dug out my bifocals and showed him the rule.... tiphat:

Back to the original post. I have the same problem with eyesight. I am unable to read my game card with out my reading glasses. I started wearing safety glasses with cheaters in the bottom. It works pretty good and they are not expensive.
