1. Yes, we rotate balls in on virtually every play, unless it was a run that was short and ended between the hashes (which for us is virtually never). I know that's not the NFHS rule, but it is "the way it's done" around here.
2. We never have our ball boys on the other sideline, or vice versa. All balls come from that team's side of the field.
3. Most crews start the night saying the ball should come in through the F or S, and will go out via the H or L. That changes on long gains.
4. The state said they don't want ballboys running out to the U, but it still happens with some crews or on occasion.
5. No one puts a ball under the upright. After the try, the U comes up the field on the kicking team's sideline and gets a ball as he goes by. In our case, the kicker just carries it out with him and hands it to the U if he wants it. Most don't. They might look at it, but most just tell the kicker (or POTENTIAL kicker) to go ahead. On a kickoff, any approved ball may be used, it does not have to be one that was used on the last series or was in the game.
6. Ballboys must be alert regardless of who is on offense. If the ball ends OOB, the covering wing will call for a ball from that sideline's ballboy and will place it on the sideline as a mark to the U while someone else chases the ball that is OOB. The U will then place the game ball using the sideline ball as his reference point. The wing will them pick up the sideline ball and toss it back to the ballboy.
7. Our ballboys are walking wounded Varsity players, not dressed out, and we have at least two for each game. God help them if an official tells us they aren't paying attention. They usually don't mind the job, as most officials want them to stand downfield in the white band. I know, also not a FED rule, but they want them close and tell them to be there. In 15 years, I have never seen a varsity aged ballboy get in the way of a play or an official.
But Mike, our officials aren't having to time a 40 second clock either. Good luck with that one on a 5 man crew! Your B's are going to be busier than one armed wallpaper hangers.
