and the band played on, and on, and....
« on: September 01, 2014, 03:01:50 PM »
Happened on Friday night (but not my game). Visiting Team's band played (some say was warming up for halftime) when the home team had the ball (supposedly interrupting the snap count). Would you stop the game and issue a verbal warning via the microphone for the band to stop while the home team had the ball? Would you contact the UIL administrator and have him/her ask the band to stop? Would you penalize the band?

I attended about three rules clinics this year and I have checked the UIL Exceptions and I don't see anything related to this from UIL or anyone else. it seems that we've focused on 25/40 second play clocks when the bigger emphasis should have been on Band procedures. Seriously, this is a can of worms that seemingly is out of control. Has anyone else faced this and what did you do? Any help will be appreciated. Thanks.

It sure would've been nice to have, discuss and inform our members of that document from UIL prior to the season starting. Thanks for your prompt response.  pi1eOn

The situation has made some noise every now and then.   ;D  The bands are "persons subject to the rules".  9-2-2-b-5 applies. If you believe the "noise" they are creating is preventing a team from hearing its signals, you can step in.  I think most guys would try to get the word to the band the fastest way possible. That may or may not be the microphone.  You do not have to warn them but I think common sense dictates you will.
