NC got rid of constables ages ago.   Tennessee still has a few here and there.  Back in the late 80's when I worked for a minor league baseball club, we had a former SC contstable who used to "flash the tin" to get free parking.  I think in SC a constable was kind of like a "Kentucky colonel" at that point- an honorary title that rendered no enforcement authority.

We turned him in to the city police who was responsible for our stadium security.  I never heard anymore about him.

Constables in Texas serve papers and write a few traffic tickets and make way too much for doing so.  Regardless, this is a real mess.  I  just wonder how each of you would have handled this situation.

What ever happened to the constable or county sheriff's deputy that arrested one or two officials during a game in Lose-isanna?

The popo lost his job in lose we Anna .   Maybe he got a new job as a constable in Texas

I would have asked the dummy to please leave the field so we could continue the game and invite him, if he felt so strongly, to take his concerns to the "offended" coach . I would also tell him we handled it and are done with it.  Also give him the UIL website so he could make whatever complaint he wished to make.   Seems like the crew here continued the game as they should have so I don't see any issue with their handling.

Sounds eerily similar to the other case. I wonder if that action would earn you a cuffed trip downtown?

One significant difference, in the other case the officials went off the field to the law-enforcement while in this case to law-enforcement came onto the field and held up the game. Don't go looking for boogers  but when they come out you got to take care of them.

I have access to the play in question and the cop is way out of line.  The officer went looking for boogers in this case.  I hate power trip people with a little bit of power.  I would have thrown a flag on him also.

That "significant difference" doesn't stop Barney from cuffing you if he so chooses. And correct me if I'm wrong, but their "leaving the field" amounted to being somewhere in the vicinity of the limits lines, wasn't it? It's not like they climbed into the stands looking for trouble.

Can a police officer really cuff a person who is not doing anything illegal, in full view of dozens/hundreds of neutral witnesses? I would guess that doing so would invite the officer to any number of lawsuits.

In Finland, if a police officer, in uniform or not, comes to the field and asks me a question, any question, I would first politely ask him to leave the field, then if he does not, I'd suspend the game and inform the home team to please remove the person from the field of play and the team areas. If he is a member of a team, then the team will get penalized, but if he is a spectator, then nothing else will be done.

If he presents himself as an authority, I would take his name and make a complaint to his precinct.

It may have evolved into that, but I still believe the confrontation started on, at, or near a sideline. And trust me, I'm not defending either side.

The officials should file disorderly conduct charges with the district attorney's office of that county. Law enforcement has no jurisdiction ANYWHERE unless a crime has been (or possibly has been) committed. As far as the statement that he would do it again, the voters (if he's the constable) or the actual constable (if he's a deputy), should remove that possibility. This person has no business in law enforcement.

Although I am not a cop,but I work with law enforcement daily. I have always told my kids and anyone else dealing with law enforcement that attitude is everything. You might be 100% correct in your interpretation of an incident, but you can still find yourself in cuffs if you fail the attitude test. I have seen it hundreds of times in the last 20 years. If you argue with law enforcement you can be arrested for disorderly conduct. As I said, you can be 100% innocent of the charge and still get arrested. The officer might get in trouble or fired like the guy in swamp land but you are still going go to jail.

My rules for handling law enforcement include being pleasant and if I want them to do something, I ask nicely. If you want to try to tell a law enforcement officer to get off the field and let us officiate you just need to be nice about.

He was THE constable for a precinct in that county.  To heck with disorderly conduct though...there is a criminal statute that specifically covers law enforcement officers who try to misuse their authority.  Go for that.

Unless the district attorney and the constable have some type of animosity between each other it is lot likely you will get anywhere by try to file charges.

I wonder how he'd feel while he's pulled over writing someone a speeding ticket, someone got out of their car and confronted him about it? My guess is he wouldn't take much of a liking to that. He needs to think about that before he acts.

Sounds like the good people of Cleveland need a vote to remove the constable office and throw this useless joker out

Help me out here. The Constable was penalized 15 yards for USC?  What does that mean? If play was only interrupted for 5 minutes, this should only be filed under weird but true tales in Texas football. Heck I've seen lots of crews take five minutes to figure out simple penalty enforcement.

As we both know, if anyone was penalized, it was not the constable.  Might have been the team he backed but how fair is that to them ?!?!?!?   That is why I asked...how do you justify a penalty flag on someone not subject to the rules?    If a jerk comes out the stands and runs around on the field for a few minutes and then goes to the R and calls him a no good so and so and then runs off, what are you who support this flag going to do?  Penalize the team that he appeared to be supporting?  Ever heard of a "false flag" operation?  Those bozos are not persons subject to the rules for good reason.

I can understand why some thought the player was being strangled but this shot seems to make clear there was no strangling going on.

Not an uncommon occurrence in the US, sadly.  And I work in law enforcement.

Here is the problem: at the here and now point, it is not the time to argue your rights, protest, etc.   If an officer is not judicious in the use of their authority, there isn't much you can do about it at the time,  that is what the courts are for.  In both this instance and the aforementioned Louisiana issue, as officials we should cooperate as much as possible and once you have reached a point you do not feel comfortable, cease your participation in the contest.

As a law enforcement officer, he is a higher, civil authority.  If game administration can't get the problem remedied, it is time to pack your gear and head to the house and let somebody higher up the food chain deal with it.  Getting arrested and hauled off to the slammer in some sort of stand your ground maneuver isn't really going to help.  You may be vendicated later but is it worth really having to deal with it?  Its just a game.  If the officer is wrapped that tight you aren't going to fix it then.

I've had officers be very helpful in dealing with unruly fans who are nearing or crossing the line and am always appreciative of their help.  I have had one or two in my career that essentially took up for the IDIOT^*!# and those you just have to shake your head and move on.

In Texas, we would suspend the game and leave.  They can resume the game at some point later if necessary, but when it is time to get out of there for weather, safety or idiot cop issues, just suspend and leave, then report to the proper agencies, TASO and UIL.

Looking at the pictures, I realized that I know this crew. I think they'll need a special award at the end of this season for this one.

I wonder if the Public Integrity Unit in Austin is available to look into this one?  :sTiR:

The a Constable is a republican so they probably have a case open already
