Someone mentioned this play (play 1) to me today and I went back to the official play-by-play.  This was called and enforced as RFP. Did anyone see that?  Would you agree with that call? Looks to me like the block, whether legal or not, happened during the return.

Do you mean RPS?  In both cases the player being blocked meets the definition of a defenseless player.

So this begs the question.  How do we define a blind-side block?  What does it take to have one?  This block meets the definition I am using but it is clear that is not the case for everyone.

It seems as though an addition to 2-3 might be in order.

It's clear that the defender never saw the offensive player, but it's hard for me to call a block that looks like it initiated between 10 and 2 a "blind-side" block. It will be interesting to see if this play makes the first tape.

Maybe 9-1-3, would like a side angle to see whether or not the contact was actually with the crown. Definitely not 9-1-4, the returner had already caught the ball and was starting to try to juke the defender. He was no longer defenseless.

This was actually penalized as Roughing the Passer by the crew.

This one gets the flag.  When the defender lowers his head (and looks at the ground) anything close to a resulting helmet-to-helmet gets a flag according to our preseason guidelines.
