Opening Coin Toss Texas v. UCLA
« on: September 14, 2014, 10:48:41 AM »
UCLA wins the toss and elects to defer.  Texas chooses to kick so UCLA gets the ball to start both halves.

This article suggests that the refs explained the consequences to the UT captain of his choice and implies the refs would have allowed him to change his initial decision.  http://ftw.usatoday.com/2014/09/texas-head-coach-charlie-strong-was-not-happy-about-his-captain-messing-up-the-coin-toss  I'm not sure that actually happened.  But, assuming it did, was it appropriate for the ref, on his own initiative and unasked by the player, to explain the consequences of the player's decision and give him a chance to change it?

The rules makers have decided to let the captains have the power to choose "wrong", so I would not argue it after carefully explaining the actual options. If the schools don't like that, they can always change the rules to let the coaches make the choices.

I dont have a problem the refs explaining the consequences of those actions, especially something so out of the ordinary.  Just to make sure that the choice was understood and what that meant, so no one can come back later and complain about the refs not letting them know.

The Texas captain's choice was "Defense! Defense!", which, not technically being an option, at least requires a bit of explanation and clarification.  Didn't help, his second choice was "Defense!"

Isn't the "defense" on a kickoff the receiving team?  The other team is in possession and  putting the ball in play.

I was able to hear the audio. UCLA wins the toss and defers. UT captain is told his choices and says "Defense", even after the R tries to talk him out of it.  Quite comical hearing the UT play by play guys saying that they must be confident in their defense if they want to put them out their first each half. That is until their sideline reporter says that Coach Strong is going bonkers.
