Extension of periods?
« on: September 22, 2014, 12:20:26 PM »
At the end of the 3Q in Dallas @ STL game yesterday, there was an offensive holding as time expired. Instead of extending the period for one play the quarter was ended and the next play was 1/17 at the other end of the field. Is the extension rule different than NCAA?

Live-ball fouls by the offense do not result in extending a period except for a few circumstances and only if the defense requests it. These circumstances include:

1) illegal touching of a kick;

Note: The period may also be extended for a “first touching” violation.

2) fair-catch interference;
3) a palpably unfair act;
4) a personal foul or unsportsmanlike conduct foul committed prior to an interception of a forward pass, the recovery of a backward pass or fumble, or offensive team failing to reach the line to gain on fourth down; or
5) a foul by the kicking team prior to a player of the receiving team securing possession of the ball during a down in  which there is a safety kick, a scrimmage kick, or a free kick.

So :02 left in the game, Team B is winning by 4 points. A1 completes a pass to A80 in the endzone for a touchdown as time runs out, but A76 is flagged for holding. Team B accepts the penalty and the game is over?

Yes, the score is cancelled, and the game is over.

I think thats a different case. In that case, you have zap-10 in effect. In the 1Q and 3Q, you dont. Thanks for the rule explanation. It doesn't really make sense, but if that's the rule that's the rule

Why would you have a ten second runoff? That's not a foul that causes the clock to stop.

The NFL's belief is that the offense shouldn't benefit (in this case, being allowed an extra play) when it commits a penalty.

Also, there is no 10-second run off in this situation.

I admit my novice on zap-10, but explain why it doesnt? Didnt this happen a few years ago with WSH and Dal? Game ended on a holding penalty by Dal

I think you're not remembering the play correctly.

3-10-WAS 13 (:03) (Shotgun) 9-T.Romo pass short right to 11-R.Williams for 13 yards, TOUCHDOWN NULLIFIED by Penalty. PENALTY on DAL-71-A.Barron, Offensive Holding, 0 yards, enforced at WAS 13 - No Play.

The final play started with 3 second left on the clock. There was penalty on the offense on a play where time expired. By rule, the score is negated, and the game is over since the period is not extended.
