Sideline Interference Enforcement

        The following occurred in a game I saw last night. Shortly after the snap, the Referee flags the team on defense for Sideline Interference. They had previously been flagged for Sideline Warning. The play continues and the play results in a TD for the offensive team. The TD stands, of course, but my question concerns enforcement of the penalty. The Referee simply signaled penalty declined and it did NOT carry over onto the ensuing kickoff. Is that correct?

If, for reasons known only to a higher power, team A declined the penalty under the belief that accepting the penalty would negate the TD, then the Referee was correct.

Otherwise, the referee is wrong.  8-2-4.  Team A can accept the penalty and choose enforcement on the try or on the subsequent KO.

IMHO, the referee should STRESS to A's captain that the score stands and the choice is where to take the penalty. IMHO, I would say : "You keep your TD, you can do the try from the 1 1/2 or kickoff from your 45." Be within hearing distance of A's coach and give the captain a clear view of him as the coach may have a suggestion.

Or possibly, the poster was using the term in the generic sense.....

        Actually, the flag did come from the Ref not the Line Judge. I was more than a bit surprised at that myself especially since the Line Judge had previously thrown the Sideline Warning flag.

Well, that would be USC, not Sideline Interference.
