Kick play
« on: October 10, 2014, 09:42:56 AM »
We have a strange one being seen. Whats your thoughts?

A lines up for kick off. All playres are huddled near the ball and break out. 10 players are in legal formation inside 5 yards behind the ball and at least 4 on one side. One player stays at the A-41 and is stationary. He then jogs down the 41 towards the sideline then with his left foot KICKS aan onside kick.

Thanks for your time and consideration. Have a safe and magnifiscient Friday.

Sounds perfectly legal.  There is no requirement about how he kicks the ball, or where he starts from or the angle at which it is kicked.

Dallas LJ I think what he is saying is that kicker is past the ball while running not at the 39 but in advance of the restraining line. While the kicker cannot technically be offside, maybe a formation infraction.

Rule 6-1-2-c-1: Each Team A player, except the holder and kicker of a place kick, must
be behind the ball.

Though it sounds weird, according to this, the play is legal. I don't think you could justify a formation foul since there are at least 4 on either side of the ball when it is kicked. This is what happens when a coach studies the rule book, or one of his buddies is an official and has clued him in on it.  :o
