Targeting the Runner?
« on: October 28, 2014, 03:16:12 PM »
Have a play generating some discussion at my school. Some believe this should be targeting, others see this as simply a hard tackle. I put it in the Texas section since it probably has some applications to doing 5-man mechanics with NCAA rules. A deep wing official would provide an additional set of eyes on the tackle.

If this is targeting its another reason why the ejection is probably too harsh a penalty. It has to make officials a bit hesitant to flag this especially with it being against the runner. If its not targeting then I'm curious if anyone has seen or has video of targeting the runner. Always great to hear your opinions. I can't the objective opinions very many places.

As long as he doesn't lead with the crown of his helmet then its not. Runner is not defenseless. So you could only call
Targeting and Initiating Contact With the Crown of the Helmet

9-1-3
 2014 PenaltyA.R.

No player shall target and initiate contact against an opponent with the crown (top) of his helmet. When in question, it is a foul. (Rule 9-6) (A.R. 9-1-3-I)
Otherwise I got nothing!

Had to run it .25 speed but only thing that made contact withe the runner was the hitter's helmet crown.  Targeting

It's under the settings button, but only if you are using the HTML5 player, which I think only Chrome uses by default.  You'll have to turn it on in other browsers.  https://www.youtube.com/html5

I would be hard pressed to have targeting on a runner but this might be it. It's still a tough call, but this didn't look good. Maybe it was his action after that bothered me as much.

Mechanics question? I work in a Fed state so we might do things different.

HL begins to move downfield when the ball is thrown. This is similar to what we would do with Fed mechanics. When the pass is intercepted and the ball carrier begins running back, we would go into reverse mechanics. The R becomes responsible for the goal line. Wings have responsibility for the side line.

In the video as the runner starts moving the HL begins to back pedal. If I was in that position I would continue moving downfield allowing the runner to pass and then trail the play watching the for him to step out and blocks around the runner. If the HL had continued downfield he would have been closer to the call and would not be trying to rule on this hit while back pedaling.

Our 5 man mechanics the HL would have responsibility for the goal line on the interception so he would be right to be back peddling.  The R would also have the GL too.  I can see why it would make more sense for the R to have it so I'll await some older heads to see if there are other reasons why it makes sense to have all three covering it.

As to the hit, in slow-mo I see it as leading with the crown however I'm not sure I would have seen that at full speed even if as HL I could have moved nearer.

I thought it was targeting at full speed. Thats dangerous right there. There was no launch but I've noticed another behavior of players who target(maybe they're learning what we're looking for and trying to do it without being called) but whenever they go into a straight line with the hit, similar to what you'd see with a launch...that usually indicates leading with the crown. I see that on this play which leads me to think this is TGT .
