Ole Miss vs Auburn
« on: November 01, 2014, 09:47:41 PM »
Am I missing something or there should've been a flag for illegal forward pass on the last play of the game?

There were two forward passes on that play

I watched it in portuguese (sadly) so I don't know if there was any explanation about it live
Or if I'm really just missing something

Unfortunately the announcers are clueless. They missed it. Wonder if ESPN makes note of the huge mistake, especially since they caught two number 1's for Auburn on the field the last play against South Carolina.

For the NCAA Crews. Let's say Ole Miss pulled off a miracle and goes the distance for a Touchdown. Two forward passes ..... Reviewable?

I was thinking the Ref was probably reaching for the flag when the 2nd forward pass was incomplete and saw no reason to throw it since the pass was incomplete and time had expired. (Situational officiating)

However, I am wondering why Ole Miss did not get to keep the ball on the play where the receiver's leg was broken at the one yard/goal line.
When his leg was fallen on by the defender, his lower leg/ankle was broken and the shin touched the ground. The shin qualifies as "any part of the ball carrier's body except his hand or foot"

Rule 4-1-3-b
When any part of the ball carrier’s body, except his hand or foot, touches
the ground or when the ball carrier is tackled or otherwise falls and loses
possession of the ball as he contacts the ground with any part of his
body, except his hand or foot [Exception: The ball remains alive when an
offensive player has simulated a kick or at the snap is in position to kick the
ball held for a place kick by a teammate. The ball may be kicked, passed or
advanced by rule] (A.R. 4-1-3-I).

The ankle is considered part of the foot. Page 30 of the CCA manual under miscellaneous in the Philosophies section.

I agree that the ankle is part of the foot as it pertains to football rules per your reference. And after further review, I will agree that it is questionable as to whether his shin actually touched (Where does the ankle end and the shin begin?)

For the sake of argument let's say the shin did touch. Should replay have allowed Ole Miss to maintain possession at the dead ball spot or would this aspect of the play even be reviewable?

I was at the game and in the booth with/as one of the "clueless announcers"... the ball was out before the runner was down near the goal line.  The correct ruling was made by the replay booth to reverse the ruling on the field of a touchdown by the HL.  We looked at the runner's ankle & above, etc. and he was not down. There was a clear and immediate recovery by Team B for a touchback.

As for the two forward passes on the last play... R was going to throw and realized it was incomplete with time expired... his choice not to throw it as it would have been a loss of down play with time expiring and the teams were already coming on the field acknowledging the game was over.  It was potentially a reviewable play for replay and had there been any time left a 10-second runoff situation.  Personally liked the way it was handled... and even us "clueless announcers" were prepared to talk about it if it mattered but it wasn't an issue.  Talking about the great game was.

Overall, thought this game was very well officiated by this SEC crew.

Just a thought... even though it didn't matter, why not talk about it to remove any doubt in the minds of the "clueless public?"

Remember I've moved over to the dark side... media so it's this simple as to why it wasn't talked about... no flag was thrown, clock is on zero, teams on the field, no-call had no impact on the outcome of the game and we had 30" to wrap up and talk about the football game before going off air.  Had a flag been thrown it would have bought us 30-45 more seconds.

Bill can you be the replay official for the announcers. Maybe you could reserve some of their mistakes.

Good to see you on the board.
