2015 New Rules.... any ideas???
« on: January 26, 2015, 11:49:38 AM »
Ok... because I am board at lunch here at work here are my random thoughts on possible rules changes/my wild ideas.

1) Let clock run after 1st downs. Put in 2 min warning. or go let clock run after 1st downs except for last 2 min of half.

2) Include an 'Illegal Contact' rule like NFL

3) Clarification of Sideline Management Rules

4) Any tweak to BBW?

ok... I am all out of random thoughts... yours?

To me, if you're going to get rid of stopping the clock on first downs then just do it for the entire game. When we get to the end of the half there is so much scrutiny on how long we keep it stopped until we wind it again. Especially in the final seconds. Do I hold the umpire on the ball?  How quick do I wind it when he is trying to get out of there?

Just keep it running, in my opinion.

#2, No no . Nononononononono. The OPPOSITE needs to happen--NFL needs to eliminate that rule entirely

If you go around tweaking Big Beautiful Women, you are going to get yourself in a lot of trouble  >:D

Considering the most popular sport in the world, soccer, does this, perhaps this is a solution.
(it would never happen, but) Four, 30min "running clock" quarters. - let them keep their timeouts and stoppages for injuries, measurements..dont forget tv too.  Toss in halftime and we're at about 3:00 start to finish.

Requiring ball carrier to be touched down by contact.

Does anyone know why the rule in college/HS has always been (as far as I can remember) down when knee or other body part down?  Is it a safety thing?  I prefer the way the NFL does it.  Allows for bigger plays on offense and puts more onus on the defense to make a play on the ball carrier as opposed to hoping they trip or stumble.

Do we really want people diving into prone runners laying on the ground? You know it will happen with "down by contact"!

I love soccer.  Played it for 20 and ref'd it for longer.  Modeling the timing after that sport would not be the wisest thing football would do.

Ease of administration?

Maybe that's the way all of football was originally, then the NFL changed their rule

Agree.  I've never understood the principle of "added time", so that the R is the only person in the place who knows exactly when the game will end.

Amen.  This just screams corrupt too.  Why can't they just stop the clock during injury time?  AND WHY DOES THE CLOCK COUNT UP?????

Realistically, rules are not made for "ease of administration".  The recent trend in rule changes favoring the offense is all about growing the popularity of the game.  Rules are made to increase fan enjoyment, and part of what we sign up for is to place ourselves as the arbiters of such rules...dont expect anyone to make a rule change that will make the official's job easier.
Coach: "I've been doing this 30 years!  I know the rules!"
Ref: "Are you married coach?"
Coach (suddenly offguard): "umm...yeah, why?"
Ref: "I've been married 30 years and my wife says there is still room for improvement"
Coach: "<silence>"

This may be largely true, but the recent tweaking on illegal blocks below the waist was to ease administration. Previously written rule was unrealistic from an officiating standpoint.

Correct. It's not the reason for a rule change, but it is a factor when deciding what the rule should be. In addition to the ease of administration, it also needs to be something the coaches can easily coach as well. That is brought up often in relation to the targeting rules.

I'm by no means a soccer guru, but added time is, in essence, time added for timeouts (stoppages).  i.e. injuries.
In as far as clock counting up, yes, it's unusual, but if I'm not mistaken, clocks count UP everywhere, but in N. America

It is, but I think the people here are making the valid point of why it could not be signalled by the referee and shown in real time on the visible game clock, instead of the referee keeping the exact amount of extra time only to himself.

The reason behind this, I think, is that FIFA is very old-fashioned, and as the referees have done so in the past (before the visible game clocks), they must keep on doing so. Maybe with the new goal cameras and fifth and sixth officials this changes some time in the next hundred years or so.

This also seems to be true with the 1 referee system they use.  Let the guys on the sidelines call stuff too!

What about a new rule regarding unsportsmanlike fouls and coaches? May lead to ejections?

Doesnt the guy on the sidelines with the signboard hold up the extra time and I think it's announced on the loudspeakers too, isn't it.

Yes, but only to the nearest minute. A lot can happen on a soccer field in 30 seconds.

The main reason they've never changed it is exactly the same reasons that pointy football keeps trying to reduce game times - TV.  With the current system, any broadcaster knows that 95% of matches *will* last about 110 minutes from kickoff to final whistle, with no more than at the absolute most, five minutes of variance.  Add five minutes of intro and five go-home on and that fits very neatly into two hours for a bare-bones presentation. (The real benefit of this is that it makes it incredibly easy to sell to overseas broadcasters as a minority-interest thing that they can do on the cheap, and now your foot's in the door of another foreign market.)  Make it twenty of each and you have a basic studio presentation that'll fit into two and a half hours.  NFL broadcasters would surely kill to know with absolute certainty that 95% of games would be between 2hr40 and 2hr45 minutes, no?
