Illegal Equipment
« on: June 04, 2015, 07:45:20 AM »
I have some question about the new enforcement for mandatory/illegal equipment, and I would appreciate any input.  Under 3-3-2d, an official stops the game clock for a violation of the mandatory/illegal equipment rule, which now only results in removing the offending player from the game for one play unless a time out is taken.  The game clock then is started on the snap under 3-3-2d.

If this occurs during the last minute of a half (e.g., the punter has his mouthpiece stuck in his helmet for all the world to see and an official stops the clock), why is this not a potential 10-second runoff situation if the clock was running and no time out is taken?  In the past, a time out or DOG foul would have occurred, so the current wording of the 10-second runoff rule would have covered it.

Technically I think you're right - this should be a runoff.  However, I don't think any official in their right mind would stop the game for this in the real world.

is the equipment thing considered a foul? or a violation?
shouldn't be a runnof if it's a violation, right?
