Does a players mouthguard have to be attached? We had a coach question that and I can't find anything in the rules book or case book that says it has to be attached.

He just needs to have one. My son played all thru High School and College sticking it in his facemask when not on the field.

And the current biggest PITA is the youth league players all wearing the detachable one where the strap just hangs loose yet the mouthpiece is in. ::)

In the NFHS rules there is nothing that indicates as such. However, I know in our Pop Warner/American Youth Football (I.E. Youth) there is a rule that requires the mouth piece to be attached to the face guard.

Flashing back to my daze of youth (Ike was in the White House) it was easy to lose my winter mittens. Finally my mom sewed them to my winter jacket. I didn't lose them anymore. Same principle with mouthpieces. Some boys pointed at them and laughed. Some girls pointed and giggled. I feel that that adverse experience may have helped prepare me for a lifetime of sports officiating.
