Horse Collar: run between the tackles
« on: September 17, 2015, 11:19:53 AM »
quick question...I have worked alot at the wings, but was working R last week in a JV game.
Ball carrier was tackled on a running play up the middle.  The tackle was clearly made by grabbing inside the top of the equipment and pulling down from behind.

I dropped my flag for a horse collar, but then immediately found myself questioning the call...In that moment, I half-remembered a post on this forum about horse collar tackle not being a foul when it occurs in the tackle box.  After conferring with my U, I waved off my own flag.

What would you have?  Foul or not? please provide a rule reference
Coach: "I've been doing this 30 years!  I know the rules!"
Ref: "Are you married coach?"
Coach (suddenly offguard): "umm...yeah, why?"
Ref: "I've been married 30 years and my wife says there is still room for improvement"
Coach: "<silence>"

No foul. 9-1-15. The horse collar rule does not apply to a runner in the tackle box. Note that exception also includes a potential passer.
