Opportunity to catch a free kick
« on: October 20, 2015, 10:18:25 AM »
Gentlemen - during last week's game we had an interesting onside kick that I'm hoping you would clarify the rule for us.

Team A pops the ball up directly off the tee. The team B player doesn't signal for a fair catch, but is going into position to catch the ball. A team A player beats him to the ball and intercepts it.

The officials throw a flag for kick catcher interference. Is this correct?

Note: I believe it is the correct call according to -

Rule 6 SECTION 4. Opportunity to Catch a Kick
Interference With Opportunity—ARTICLE 1
Approved Ruling 6-4-1 I.

but we're looking to double check.

Thanks in advance.

Thank you. This discussion forum is a great way for us coaches to continuously learn the nuances of the rulebook.

Had the same thing happen in Texas varsity game a few weeks back.  Of course, Team A recovers the ball and coach can't get it through his head that "unimpeded opportunity" means just that.  Even got some quizzical looks from my R.  Tough call to make but it's the right one.

If not for this rule teams would bring the center from the basketball team out just to try this.

Correct call.  Just for reference- imagine this same play happened on a punt.  No-brainer KCI, right?  Same applies to your play.

Just for clarification, wasn't there a recent change regarding the same opportunity for free kicks kicked directly into the ground as well?
