$1200 for a 6man game
« on: October 28, 2015, 09:52:52 AM »
So this email went out to the Houston Chapter Ref's last night...

If your crew is interested in driving to Loraine for a 6 man Jr Hi game and a varsity game v Blackwell for the district championship let me know asap.  They will pay mileage for 1 car round trip.  2 game fees, meal money and 2 motel rooms.  Let me know.   This is about 425 miles one way.  Thanks,

A few questions popped into my head.  How much is this game costing?  Why can some schools choose to pay more?  Is this a sign of things to come?  Why don't more schools start being proactive with their pay rates?

How much is this game going to cost them?

So 4 person crew lets do the math...

Travel  $425
8 Game Fees @ 50 = $400
2 Hotel Rooms @ 100= $200
8 Meals @ $30= $240

Minimum this is going to cost $1200 it could be as much as $1500.  I am just guessing at room rates and Meal Money.  So how can a 6man school afford $1200 for 2 games when the 6A schools cry about a $50 SV game?

So does a school get in trouble for paying more then 1204 calls for or are they free to go above and beyond?

Is this a sign of things to come?  I am still on record as saying that there will be a day very soon when schools will bid on crews.  Football is just too important in too many places for coaches to trust their livelihood to someone THEY feel is incompetent.

On another note I truly did not realize how bad it is with coverage in West Texas until I read this.  Either it is really bad or this school has HACKED off all the chapters out there... Or Both =).

UIL only dictates the game fees, mileage fee and meal cost. Anything over 150 round trip is subject to what the schools want to do such as motels, airfares and such. Seems a little drastic for a 6 man game, IMO.

It would only be for 4 officials because a lot of 6 man schools play there JH games before the Varsity games and the same crew covers both. We (Fort Worth Chapter) have had several crews cover Loraine's games this year as well as last year.

So the driver at $413 ($233 for mileage, $100 game fee, $50 for a room and $30 for meal) and three at $180 ($0 for mileage, $100 game fee, $50 for a room and $30 for a meal). That comes up to $953. So other than the driver you are leaving with 130.00 dollars.

425 miles so 950 miles round trip.  @.55 cents a mile = about $425 total for travel

Whoever worked it earned their pay.  Final score was 71-70 with Loraine winning.

And there was an incredibly huge Illegal Motion that went unflagged on the last play. Luckily it was an incomplete pass so the offense didn't score on it.

Probably too tired to pull the flag.  A day's travel + a 141-pt game.....

The only fair thing to do is a 2-game suspension for the whole crew, then.

Well you have to punish in proportion to the severity of the offense.

Drunk driving = 1 game

Missed call = 2 games

Why can some schools choose to pay more?

This game was @ Blackwell so they're footing the bill, right? Then I know the answer of how Blackwell can choose to pay more: That wind powered generator on their property is rolling in big money for them. According to their coach (as he told it to us when I went out there), they worked it out so the school gets all of the proceeds. They even have a program where every student who graduates gets something like a scholarship of $1,000 for each year they attended Blackwell (starting from K).

In fact, have a look at the finest 6-man field I've ever seen:
