HUDL question
« on: November 04, 2015, 05:06:52 PM »
Our chapter is paying for the HUDL program, in hopes of using it for training.  The problem is, we only have one school that is willing to share game film.  The coaches are concerned with the films "getting out" where other coaches can see it.  So it appears that our chapter is spending a lot of money for nothing.  Does any other chapters have this issue if using this?

We had some coaches that had the same issue, but fortunately many of them didn't. As a state, we get just over half of the games on video. It often requires follow-up by the crew to request the video, but they do it.

I would suggest communicating as much as possible to your crews to not share any video outside of their crew. If they want to share individual plays with others in the association that should be fine. Make sure this is a clearly communicated policy and share it with the coaches. If they have an association definitely work with their leadership. The key once they start providing video is to back up what you said you would do to control the distribution.

We have only 1 school that will not share.  After every Friday night game when I get home I will submit a request to each school.  By Saturday afternoon I will have every game.  I then watch each game and add comments and then share it with the crew. The crew does not have the ability to share it with anyone else.  I have that feature turned off.  For the one school that doesn't share, I bypass them and get it from their opponent.  At our chapter meetings I have a training video of about 40 plays that we review.   It has worked out great.  Three years ago, before we signed up, I contacted each school to get their thoughts on us using hudl and they were very supportive.  Been smooth every since.

I have not been refused by any coach for my request. Most of the time I'll have it within 5 minutes.

This is one of the struggles we are having. I work on it one coach at a time. I am now starting to get more film. (I run the HUDL for my group). Eventually you will start to convince the coaches that it helps you become better officials. The coaches who say video might get to other coaches are making excuses because coaches exchange video all the time. That was why the HUDL was developed. It basically allows the coach only to see the video if the other coach places video into the exchanges.

We have worked 13 games and have 2 films for the year. Our WH ask every coach in pregame and sends follow up emails but to no avail. It really sucks because it is a great training tool.http://www.refstripes.com/forum/Smileys/classic/pileon.gif

In San Antonio we rarely miss getting film of our games. Just one more thing Mike Wise does for us.

centex:  PM me your email address and I will add you to our account.  I have about 3500 training clips if you want them.

For those of you that say the coaches do not want to send them in I am calling BS.  For our last 5 years of HUDL I have received every game film I have ever asked for including all the out of our territory playoff games.  So have 8-10 other crews that have actually asked for the film the correct way when asking for film.  You must send the coaches a request thru HUDL.  You can tell them all you want during the pregame.  They will not remember after the game is over.  We get 60-80 game films a week.  Of the 150 schools we covered over the past 5 years of HUDL there was 1 that refused to send in tape and he retired 3 years ago.  The fact of the matter is every kid puts their highlight film on youtube so if a coach wanted to look at game film he simply types in "stud player on team B highlight film" into youtube and he can get all of the film he wants.

Simple process:
1.  Chapter wide every time the president or assigning secretary receives a complaint the first words out of their mouth should be, "Coach send me the HUDL film"
2.  If you can not demonstrate that you use HUDL in some way shape or form then you should not be allowed post season games.

I promise if you do those 2 things HUDL participation will increase 500%.

One has to be diligent. When I send an email to the coaches confirming kickoff time, site, etc., I will ask them to share their videos. When visiting with them during the pregame conference, if the HC is not the HUDL coach, I ask who their HUDL coach is and get his contact information from him. Otherwise, I remind the HC we'd like the film. The Houston Chapter utilizes Zebra-Ware and immediately after the game I send the ZW foul report through ZW. There's a reminder on the report to send the HUDL film. We also email the NCAA Foul Report immediately after the game and when that's done, I remind them to send the film. THEN, I log into HUDL and initiate a film (we send a 1 play "token training play" film) exchange with both schools. If I haven't received the film by noon the next day, guess what? I'm emailing them again. Still no film a day later? Email them again and re-initiate another game exchange. DILIGENCE. I've received 100% of my crew's game films over the last three years.

I just picked a date, Sept 25. Our chapter had 42 ball games and 18 films are on our hudl list. Less than 50%. Some weeks were less than that other over. Just saying.....

Clearly the experience differs area by area.  I believe it is worth every penny to try it. If after a few years you can't get more participation from schools then let it go but give it a try.  Plus, others chapters (and the State) can do things with your chapter in HUDL.
