Illegal Batting
« on: June 18, 2016, 10:48:11 PM »
Fourth and 10 at the A-5. B77 blocks the punt and the ball bounces into Team A’s end zone. A21 bats the ball from the end zone into the field of play and it goes out of bounds at the A-6.

Safety or B 1&G at A-3. The kick does not end until the ball goes out of bounds, so the entire play is one big scrimmage kick play. And since it crosses the neutral zone before going out of bounds, Team B can either enforce it where the subsequent dead ball belongs to them (A-6) or "at the previous spot". The quotation marks are because of the new editorial change this year to 6-3-13. There is now an exception that states that the "previous spot" enforcement is actually a safety for fouls in A's end zone. I think a lot of people might have already assumed that, but the specific wording of the rule meant that it technically wasn't an option before.

I initially struggled with the fact the act of kicking didn't cause the ball to go across the NZ so I wasn't thinking a tack on situation. Rereading the rule I realize that 1) it is a scrimmage kick regardless of the block and 2) the rule says the ball has to cross the NZ during the scrimmage kick play. So, all the elements are there for a tack-on option.
