Live-ball fouls treated as dead-ball fouls
« on: June 24, 2016, 10:55:48 AM »
I am beginning to study NCAA rules, and I see the phrase "live-ball fouls treated as dead-ball fouls" multiple times, but I have not been able to find a specific definition for it.

For example, this excerpt from FR-45 is especially confusing because it has the phrase, but also separately lists types of fouls which seem to match the description (UNS fouls).

(Exceptions:Penalties for flagrant personal fouls, unsportsmanlike conduct
fouls, dead-ball personal fouls and live-ball fouls treated as dead-ball fouls
are enforced on the succeeding play)

Any insights?

They are exactly what the name says. Fouls that technically occur during a live ball, but are enforced as if they occurred during a dead ball. For instance, sideline interference. Even though the interference occurs while the ball is live, it is enforced as if it happened after the play. The play stands, the down counts, and it is enforced from the succeeding spot.

Also, unsportsmanlike conduct fouls no longer fall in this category if they are by players. If a player commits a live ball UNS, it is enforced just like any other live ball foul.

So what would be some other examples of a "live ball foul enforced as a dead ball" foul. Would a facemask during a try by Team B in the endzone AFTER a change of possession constitute a live ball foul enforced as a dead ball foul? Since it is a personal foul?

I think that's special penalty enforcement rather than live-ball enforced as dead-ball, since it does things like cancelling a score that regular penalty enforcement does not.

Big example of LB-->DB would be a sideline interference type penalty...the foul occurs during live ball action but the penalty is enforced as if it occurred during a dead ball period.

IIRC there is a comprehensive (but possibly slightly outdated) list of LBFEADB fouls somewhere in this forum. Try searching for the term.

As Osric said, a FM foul doesn't qualify as it is a live ball foul, which have a special enforcement on tries and extra periods after a COP.
