Play situation
« on: June 29, 2016, 06:50:52 AM »
A 1/10 @ A40 @ position 3

QB A11 takes a hand to hand snap from A50, and immediately tosses the ball backward to A33 who is running to his right.  LG A66 pulls to his left, A33, at position 4, tosses the ball to A88 who is running toward the left sideline (reverse play) and he catches the backward pass at the A27.  When A88 passes position 2, he is at the A32, at this time A66, at position 1, facing position 3, blocks B35 from the side, below the waist, at the A39.  A88 continues up the sideline and is driven out of bounds at the B45.

Sorry for all the positions and such, but I wanted to make sure everything was clear on the play.

seems like you're trying to picture a crackback block on a reverse behind the NZ and, from what I understood, it would not be a foul since A66 is a player who is covered by paragraph 1 of 9-1-6-a and, therefore, does not have the restriction to block low towards the original position of the ball at the snap

Correct, I wanted to be very clear on where things happened during th play.

This is from paragraph 1:

The following Team A players may legally block below the waist inside the tackle box until they leave the tackle box or until the ball has left the tackle box.

Now the block is outside the tackle box and A66 was definitely unrestricted to start the play, but it would appear that the idea here, is that the only side blocks that should be deemed legal would be those inside the tackle box.  Also, that they could only be made by players that were unrestricted at the start of the play and remained so by not leaving the tackle box, at least that's the way I read it.

My attempt of clarification in my head.

All blocks below the waist must be from 10-2.

Except, blocks within the tackle box, by stationary players lined up in the tackle box at the snap, prior to the unrestricted player or the ball leaving the tackle box.

Blocks by restricted players may not be made towards the original position of the ball until the ball is clearly beyond the NZ.

Once the ball is beyond the NZ no blocks may be made toward Team A's endline.

Agree with you

The whole paragraph 1 thing - unrestriction (is that a word) - only applies while the player is in the tackle box

missed the fact that he is not anymore in your example

but I think I agree with you that this would be an illegal crack back block
