Advice to a new guy headed to camp for the first time
« on: August 12, 2016, 03:53:51 PM »
I am headed to camp tomorrow (8/13-14).  I am a new collegiate umpire.  Any advice for me at the camp?

Jog when you can walk.

Be a good communicator.

Work your keys.

You have 2 ears and 1 mouth for a reason. Don't ever forget that. If the Supervisor tells you the sun rises in the west...

You get my drift.
"Gentlemen, we are going to relentlessly chase perfection, knowing full well we will not catch it, because nothing is perfect. But we are going to relentlessly chase it, because in the process we will catch excellence. I am not remotely interested in just being good."

There's no doubt you have to have it on the field and pass the "eye test". But at the end of the day, this, like everything else, is a people business. Make connections and try to give your peers more than you get. You never know where they're going to end up.

Responses to clinicians should be one of the following: thanks, ok, I understand, (question), and thank you.

It was the KJCCC clinic.  They do a Saturday at Butler JuCo and a Sunday at Hutch JuCo.  It was very well done.

I'm not a college official, but I remember when I first started officiating high school football and my mentor told me a few things.  One, have fun because there is no greater feeling than being on a football field officiating our future.  Two, listen to what is said to you.  Good luck in your year and at the end come back and tell us how the season was.
