Sliding Ball Carrier
« on: August 25, 2016, 05:51:59 PM »
4th-10 at the 50.  A10 receives the snap and runs to his right and is at the B-41 when he "dips his rear" down to start his slide.  The ball is at the B-40 when something other than his hand or feet touches the ground.  Ruling?  Rules support?

From Rogers Redding CFO memo (COLLEGE FOOTBALL OFFICIATING, LLC - 2016: RULES INTERPRETATIONS) dated June 14, 2016:

SLIDING BALL CARRIER
Interpretation:
When a ball carrier gives himself up and goes into a feet-first slide, the ball is declared dead at its forward-most point when he obviously begins his slide.
Comment:
Rule 2-27-14-j (duplicated in Note 2 of Rule 9-1-4) adds a new category of defenseless player: a ball carrier who has given himself up and is sliding feet first. Although the defenseless-player designation applies only to applications of the targeting rule in 9-1-4, the question arises as to where the ball is declared dead after a player starts his slide. The interpretation is intended to clarify this point.

So, we need to make a best judgment as to the position of the ball when he first commits to slide.  In your example sounds like the 41 yard line.  Based on the guidance here the "something other than his hand or feet touches the ground" doesn't come into play here.

It's easy to get the players, getting 'em to play together, that's the hard part. - Casey Stengel

Thanks.  That bulletin slipped past my radar.
