Is a player who has been ejected for fighting allowed to stay on his team sideline or does he have to go to the locker room?

He can stay on the sideline. Under FED, only ejection that requires removal from field and team is ejection of HC.

Think liability here.  You don't want to send a player to an area where he may not be under adult supervision.  If he stays on the sideline, he has coaches and possibly other team related adults to keep an eye on him.  If you send him to a locker room out of sight you have no idea what trouble he may get into.

Guess who will be blamed if he is sent to a locker room, is not supervised and then does something which causes injury to himself or others or causes property damage.

I saw an interesting situation in a girls' basketball game.  A girl was ejected after starting a very ugly fight.  They brought her parents down from the stands and had her parents escort her out of the gym.  Obviously, that wouldn't always been an option, but it seemed like a pretty sensible solution in this situation.

I believe this policy varies by state.  I would check with your state office.  PA just issued an interp that an ejected player can stay on the bench.  If you send a player out of the stadium, and adult has to accompany him.  Coaches must leave the stadium.
