Nothing wrong with this ..
« on: September 29, 2016, 11:03:48 AM »
It Team A, has at the snap, the following players on the line of scrimmage: A82, A75, A64, A51, A67, A79, A80, A46 I read this as a legal formation since Rule Rule 7-2-Art 5b has been met... Am I reading the rule incorrectly? As I read the rules there is no requirement that requires anyone be off the line except the QB of course A75 and A80 are covered up and thus ineligible?

Correct, A80 is ineligible by position, but the requirement of having 7 players on the line of scrimmage and having 5 of them wear numbers 50-79 has been met.

All of the usual provisions for ineligibles apply to A80, e.g. he cannot go downfield before a pass that crosses the LOS.

Holder A5 is in position for an attempted FG. The snap goes high, A5 raises to catch the snap and immediately returns to his knee, A) he is now permitted to leave his knee and attempt to advance the ball (faked kicked) or b)  is he eligible from his kneeling position, to throw a backwards pass?

  (A) Yes, 4-2-2a Exception 2

  (B) No, 4-2-2a Exception 1

I've had coaches ask : "Can the holder assume a baseball catcher's crouch , so we don't have to worry about that rule?"

Response : " Coach, you wouldn't have to worry about that BUT your snapper would lose his protection and you couldn't use the numbering exception as, BY RULE, that wouldn't be a scrimmage kick formation."

The holder can raise, catch the errant snap, and return to his knee then rise to run or pass. He cannot make a backward pass from the knee. He has to rise off the knee to do that. If not, the ball is dead when he makes the pass.
