Helmet/jersey numbers don't match
« on: November 11, 2016, 05:24:34 PM »
Last week I happened to catch the part of the Toledo/Akron game to see this situation happen. Akron's starting left tackle goes down to injury, and so now they have to move their tight end, #49, to take his place. They change his jersey number to #59 and properly report to the referee, but the number on the side of his helmet still says #49. Is there a provision in the rules making this permissible or is it just one of those things you have to decide on a case-by-case basis?

Rulebook says: "All players of a team shall have the same color and style numbers front and back. The individual bars must be approximately 1-1/2 inches wide. Numbers on any part of the uniform shall correspond with the mandatory front and back jersey numbers."

But I don't think any official would flag that.

I had an offensive tackle 76 wearing pants with 49. Got me a little confused to start the game as a wing but I didn't flag it and we moved on. A lot of bigger aspects to take care of that I felt like taking issue with that would be unnecessary

The take home message that I'm getting is that this jersey is not legal then... correct?
