UNS after COP with previous foul
« on: November 29, 2016, 12:45:05 PM »
had a 4/10 Field Goal atempt blocked and returned for TD.

The block was made by a player who was flagged for Leveraging.
Blocked kick was returned for TD by B1, who jumped into the end zone, drawing a flag for UNS.

To avoid the loss of possesion, A has to accept Leveraging and decline UNS, right? So that UNS does not count against B1?

If the UNS is a live-ball foul, then that's two live-ball fouls by B. Team A will of course accept the one that is enforced from the previous spot, as opposed to the one that lets Team B keep the ball. However B1 is still halfway to disqualification. It's two UNS *fouls* and you're gone, not two UNS *accepted penalties.*

Morningrise has the key:  live ball vs. dead ball.  If UNS is live-ball then it has to be declined for A to keep the ball.  OP looks like it's live ball since it was a result of "jumping onto the EZ".  If it were a dead ball foul, diving after crossing the goal line for example, the score would be canceled by the 1st enforcement for the live ball foul and the DB-UNS could then be tacked on.

By philosophy, should we make the UNS a deadball foul occurring after the ball broke the plane?

No. if te player dives from the field of play into the end zone, it is a live ball foul from the spot where he began his dive. Although there is an AR that says if you're not sure whether he was in the field of play or in the end zone, then make it a dead ball foul. But if it's clear that he had not scored at the time of the dive, it should be a live ball foul.

thanks guys...
I guess the only reason to make it a dead ball foul in this case would be if the UNS were not to be charged against the player if the penalty was declined. But since it is, then there's no reason to create a penalty here

I agree that the UNS described is a live-ball foul so for "A" to keep the ball this penalty will be declined and the leverage foul accepted.  Now think practically... Team B just returned this ball the length of the field for a TD... there won't be an official within 20 yards of this score nor a defender which is why the UNS foul occurs.  The "when in doubt" comes in because you're not parked on the goal line.  So if you know the call you make the call.  If you have doubt because mechanically your not in position then we go dead ball foul.  If you can get to the goal line with or before the player scoring, you should be playing the game, not officiating it.

All that said, if you go two live ball fouls (one accepted, one declined), Team A isn't going to be complaining getting the ball back for a first & goal.

I was going to link my LJ running ang getting to the GL with the runner but the link is for the whole 1st quarter and the camera was sideways so I won't bother with that...

Now, maybe he should be playing, but he's not anymore...

Can't say, though, that he was able to see anything on the play while running to the GL...
