R working a different position in a semi final?
« on: December 10, 2016, 08:30:40 PM »
Thoughts on a R from another crew filling in as a deep wing for a crew in a Semi Final game?????? seems not cool in my opinion

A lot depends on why and who. Did the crew just realize someone didn't take/pass the test and therefore ineligible to work and needed a quick fill in? Is the R that worked deep have past experience? Worked at a high level, like maybe a former NFLR official. If it's just they wanted their buddy to work and had no experience back there then that's pretty lame.

I'm not understanding the question: what difference does it make if it is an R, rather than a BJ, a U, or anyone else?

Sounds like a little jealousy to me. Those who aren't working always think those who are have no business being there.

Well first of all an R is a leader of his crew, why should he jump ship to work a game for another crew?  Secondly no one unless they work B or deep wing should sub in at deep wing, one wouldn't expect a L to work U in a different game would they?

Thats a stretch, I would never work deep wing...I would fall asleep, plus I'm busy this weekend anyway...

It just depends.  As far as I know, only Houston was using 7 man crews throughout the regular season.  So, all the other chapters have to fill in SJ/FJ with people who they feel know the positions (usually either current or former FJ/SJ).  Who knows, maybe this R used to be a college SJ/FJ and therefore has worked the position.  So in the playoffs he was called into service.

I wonder if that could be possible...  yEs:

Typical response for a 'first year guy'. That attitude makes you destined for great things.

And most R's have enough knowledge of the other mechanics to not miss a beat. Coupled with the idea that he could 'fall asleep' at deep wing anyway, you obviously don't think that position is much of a transition anyway.

That attitude has helped me be "involved" in some really good games I think I'm on a good pace, my point was there are plenty of deep guys out there without having to call on a R to work

Most officials I know can (and do) work multiple positions throughout the course of a season.

I get that many officials are capable of working deep wing but it seems we try to be like college officials so much with the radios and what not, why not hold officials to a higher standard and have them work at specific positions just like college?  Work your position and work it well, no way an R or any other position official could move in to a different position and work just as well as one that specializes in that position

Did this happen in a big chapter that works 7 man regularly? If so, it's more of the same old same old B S. Doesn't matter if you make the crew better giving the kids our best available option, it's just about getting your boy a game. Sad.

Folks complain about a shortage of officials and you think limiting officials to a specific position will fly? Good luck with that.

I was being chapter specific, this chapter is very large with more than enough officials

This is an issue of contentment.
I get it...working in the playoffs is supposedly recognizing top officials for their work during the regular season, and so we all have a desire to be recognized by our peers.

The difference is in perspective.  Do you start the season expecting a playoff assignment?  I know I dont.  I look at any time I get to step on the field, regular season or not, as a privilege and I consider myself fortunate.

Regardless of the circumstances, if someone else is tapped for an opportunity, be happy for that guy.  Celebrate that guy.  Encourage and root for that guy.
Be content and take care of the things you can control.  Do that, and you will get your opportunity to be the guy that everyone else celebrates and roots for...not just in officiating, but in life.

Anything else is born of envy and discontentment and does not endear you to anyone.

I can certainly appreciate this but my original post was pointing to the fact that a R working deep wing for another crew in the playoffs is nothing short of solicitation, most of you severely underestimate the pathetic lengths crews will go through to get a game...I can assure you I am not jealous, I work my games and enjoy them

Seriously?

I set goals every season and I expect to achieve my goals every season. I expect to achieve them bc I work all off season to get better. Sometimes I may come up short, which can be frustrating but it pushes me that much more to continue to improve. But I guess keep your expectations low if that's how you like to do it.

I know in my chapter there have been several cases where a R randomly shows up at games and requests to be the ball boy and conveniently is next to the head coach for most of the game.

I never said dont set goals.  I do the same...every time i step on the field, I try to improve at least 1 area of my game.

Setting a goal to attain is a very different thing than expecting or feeling entitled to a playoff assignment....perhaps for clarity I could have said "feel entitled" rather than "expecting" in the bold section of the prior post.

Unless you have firsthand, direct knowledge of solicitation, this is a serious allegation to bring.
If you do have such knowledge, then feel free to report it to the Ethics committee.

Coming to an online message board to complain about someone getting an assignment serves no purpose other than to internally alienate the community that already has more than enough opposition coming from the outside.

As I said in my post, I choose to be happy for the guy that got tapped, regardless of the circumstance.
If you handle your business on the field, then sooner or later, you will be the guy in that spot...I am sure you wouldnt want everyone under the sun undermining the work you put into your craft by asserting that you brown-nosed your way there.   deadhorse:

I have first hand knowledge of solicitation every year but I would never report it because it's high school football and I laugh at grown men that want a high school game that bad, I wasn't complaining either I asked a simple question, seems like many got defensive, I was more or less trying to gauge the moral turpitude of other members on here across the state, thanks for the feedback
