Punt and momentum rule.
« on: December 19, 2016, 07:29:03 PM »
Was watching a college bowl game and saw this:

Team A punts and Team A catches the punt at the B 5 yard line.  He continues into the End zone.  Crew gave the Team B the ball at the 5 yard line.  I did not think the momentum rule was given to Team A.  Since he carried the ball into the end zone, we have a touchback.  That is why the BJ and other in 7 man are at the goal line, to make sure the ball does not cross the goal line.  It doesn't matter where the player is, just the ball.  Once it crosses, it's a touch back.  Doesn't matter if team B already touched it.  It's not dead once he catches it, is it?

What TXMike said. Rule reference is 4-1-3-e: "[A live ball becomes dead] when a player of the kicking team catches or recovers any free kick or a scrimmage kick that has crossed the neutral zone."

Also, momentum rule applies only when a player goes into his own end zone, not opponent's. "It is not a safety if a player between his five-yard line and his goal line"

Different scenario, free kick and B-2 backpedaling catches the ball at the 3 yd line and his momentum carries him into the endzone. There realizing where he is he downs the ball. Ruling?
