Summer 7-on-7 Tourneys
« on: January 09, 2017, 07:59:30 AM »
I'm a Floridian.  Can yall enlighten me on TX HS summer 7-on7 tourneys?
Are they a big deal?
What is the format? (i.e. 25-min running clock?)
2-man crews?
for the big tourneys (i.e. at UT, A&M, etc - if they have them), what are the officials paid?

They are a pretty big deal.

General information is this:  Teams are by Schools and divided into 2 classes -- Big Schools are the Class 6A and 5A schools and the Small Schools are the 4A and below.  All teams are "Dad coached", that is the school coaches are not allowed to coach the teams.  Of course, coaches sit at the back of the EZ and comment from time to time -- but they can get in some hot water depending on how far they go.

As for the game -- 45 yard field.  Possession starts at the right hash.  2 20 minute running halfs -- with a 10 minute half -- so games are 50 minutes.  Games start on the hour -- so another 10 minutes between games.  The schools running SQT or State Qualifier Tournaments.  One school will host 16 teams -- 4 pools of 4 teams.  4 teams play 3 round robin games each.  Each pool winner advances to semis.  Two finalists qualify for state tournament.

As for officials -- Pool play typically has 2 officials -- one on each side line. We call fouls, player down and FP.  We do not handle the ball. Players have to spot the ball.  Officials are paid $25 per game.  For Semis and Finals, we use a third official -- back judge -- but pay goes down to $20 per official.

State Tournament at the end of the year increases the number of officials, but reduces the per game fee.

THANKS
They're a pretty-big deal here too.  Every weekend in the summer there's some tourney going on in this area for teams to participate in.
Round these parts though the game is only 25min running clock total.  So 2 games every hour.
Otherwise, pretty much the same.
Pay is a tad more here.  On avg each game, each official gets about $15-18. - depends on the tourney.

There are other 7 on 7 tournaments - different leagues, Middle School, Private School, etc. at different pay rates and timing.  But, the Big Kahuna is these Public School - UIL sanctioned -- SQT's that culminate in the State Tournament in College Station in July. The State Tournament take 128 Big Schools and 128 Small Schools and run a massive tournament with 100+ officials over 3 days.  Adidas outfits the Teams and the Officials at a cost of several million dollars -- college scouts, etc.

The State does not sanction any tourney here.
Week-in and week-out various HS hosts tourneys, but there's several big ones in Central FL at the big universities. (UCF, USF) and the IMG Academy has a big one.  All those have 'someone' there from a university taking a look.
Thanks for the recon.
