USC or just part of the game ?
« on: January 23, 2017, 04:57:36 AM »
1st & 10 on the ½ yard line going out. 1:08 remaining in the half. Team A have 0 TO's Team B has 1 TO. Team A say they are going to kneel out the half, so call the half time but Team B wants to play it out - chance of a safety.
Teram A is adamant that they will take a knee and stress that Team B cannot get physical.
Team A at the snap charges forward and makes 3 yards.

USC for unfair act or just part of the game ?

Every snap is a live play.  No where in the rulebook does it say that teams "cant get physical" if one team declares taking a knee.
Team B has a legit argument to wanting to play it out.  As a general rule, "taking a knee" is a minimum loss of 1 yard when the QB takes a snap under center.  In this situation, Team A has to make the effort to get out of the EZ, and has no right to complain about Team B's level of aggression to stop them from advancing the ball.

Would you have a USC if the QB just completed a long pass and was running up to the line indicating he would "clock" or "spike" the ball, and then ran a play instead?

If Team B is lulled to sleep and doesnt attack in either situation, that is their own fault imho.  No foul.
Coach: "I've been doing this 30 years!  I know the rules!"
Ref: "Are you married coach?"
Coach (suddenly offguard): "umm...yeah, why?"
Ref: "I've been married 30 years and my wife says there is still room for improvement"
Coach: "<silence>"

The kneel down is just another play. Not firing off when the other team is taking a knee is just a "sportsmanship" thing.  If it's the first half or the end of the game and the defense is down by less than a score, you can't flag anybody for playing football.

In these situations I always remind the offensive line to protect themselves as the defense is fully within its right to aggressively rush the ball carrier.

Like others have said, it is not the job of the officials to get involved in the play calling of either team in any situation. If team A says they will take a knee, the only thing that we should do is to remind team B to play smart. It is not a foul if team A then runs a regular play or if team B rushes the QB (obvious late hits are an exception, of course).

The rules do not provide for team A to unilaterally decide to end a quarter if they could take repeated knees to do so. Of course, if BOTH teams agree to end a quarter early, you can do so (provided your competition rules allow it).
