Many moons ago, the NFL prepared a great video of the 6 categories of DPI, and some OPI examples.  For me, that was, hands down, the greatest training tool I ever saw.  I think another version was prepared not quite so many moons ago.  Anybody have any idea where to find either of those videos?  I know some folks that need to see a video of the categories.

  • Everyone needs a student, a mentor, & a friend
Coach: "I've been doing this 30 years!  I know the rules!"
Ref: "Are you married coach?"
Coach (suddenly offguard): "umm...yeah, why?"
Ref: "I've been married 30 years and my wife says there is still room for improvement"
Coach: "<silence>"

Thank you, HEFNERJM!  The rules discussion doesn't exactly apply to NCAA (so ignore that part).  But those are the six categories, and they apply to the NCAA game.
Again, thank you!

In reality, the 6 categories apply to all levels of the game. Pass interference is pass interference.

I like the way Eisen clearly make sure he adds the word "restricts."  Remember, the action needs to "take something away" (i.e. material restriction).  I hear too many officials say, for example, "early not contact playing the ball" but they offer no additional facts of what restriction occurred.  So if he never looks back to the ball and makes even the slightest contact that's not enough for a foul.  Another example is a tug of the jersey.  Just because you see the jersey extend from the body due to a player slightly grabbing it you probably don't have a foul if it clearly doesn't restrict him (taking a step away).

I don't know if there is a full video on the topic, but it is also great to see plays showing action that is NOT DPI or OPI. I believe a football official can best advance by having a good sense of the game and knowing when NOT to throw the flag on a what is really a good football play.
