Timing question.
« on: November 06, 2017, 02:21:28 PM »
4th and a bunch with clock running.  Team A coach calls team to sideline and lets the play clock expire.  He then sends punt team onto field.  When does game clock start?  Book says delay when in scrimmage kick formation it starts on snap, but the team was not in any formation when delay occured.  It was a blowout game in 4th period so I wound clock on the ready  ;D  but if this was a close game late with Team A ahead, what is the correct thing to do?

  • The rules are there if you need them.

I would invoke 3-4-3 and start it on the snap.

Snap. If on the ready, you're giving them potentially a full minute plus of an advantage (40+25 after the penalty). Agree with Elvis on cite.

If a blowout, I have no issue with starting on the ready to get out of there.  Sometimes common sense has to prevail.
