Illegal participation - period expired
« on: October 23, 2018, 02:08:30 PM »
A is going for a field goal with a few seconds on the clock, 2nd quarter.

Fake field goal, A tosses the ball downfield.

Pass is intercepted.

During the return, A30's helmet comes off.  A30 continues to participate in the play and helps make the tackle.

Time expires during the run-back.

What is the ruling, enforcement, option(s) if any?

15 yards / half the distance from the end of the run, team B 1/10 or G, untimed down. This is a simple live-ball personal foul so no option to carry it over. Team B may of course decline the penalty in which case the half is over (and might do so if the ball ends up somewhere like B-20).

I should clarify:

The player whose helmet came off was from the team that threw the interception.

That doesn’t change the ruling presented.

And A30 must sit out one play (absent a team a timeout) which may be the second half kickoff if Team B declines the penalty.

You are absolutely correct. I doubt that the intent of the rule is for A30 to not be able to participate in the 2nd half KO, but there is no exception for this.

  • The rules are there if you need them.

In fact, when this rule was first introduced, I believe this scenario was covered in a bulletin, but I'd have to go back and research.  But, yes, he would be required to sit out the 2nd half kickoff, if there is not another play in an extended 2nd period.

Well, then, we got *that* quite wrong.  Thank goodness it was a "college club" game.

None of us on the crew stepped up and challenged the ruling (we flagged it but said it's not going to extend the period).
I think all of us were, for one reason or another, thinking to not extend the period for an untimed down.  Don't know why.
Yet, we all *knew* we got it wrong somehow, just to what extent was unclear.

Stupid brain does stupid things.
