After seven weeks...
« on: October 23, 2018, 02:31:41 PM »
...still have play clock operators, in particular, that don't understand the 40-second play clock changes for 2018.

Any chance the UIL could/would require clock operators to attend a short meeting to review clock rules each year (prior to scrimmages)?  It could be part of a local chapter meeting.  It could be part of a regional workshop.  It could be part of the state coaches' meeting.  It could be part of our Annual Meeting.
Of course not.  What was I thinking?

For last game, through appropriate channels, requested (as always) to see play clock operators at our dressing room one hour before game time.  Got the message back that they "...usually arrive 15 minutes before the game.  Haven't had any problems this year."  Sure enough, could not find either CO before game time (I don't know who started the pre-game clock).  Had to start game without a "conference."
Couldn't get game clock to start on RFP signal several times.  Couldn't get it to stop on an out of bounds play.  Play clock at 40 after punts and running.  No field mic to give instructions.  Between 1st/2nd periods, had to go to sideline, insist on talking to clock operators.  Finally got a coach to get them on a headset.  "It (play clock) doesn't run after punts?"  No, sir.  "Oh.  OK."  Please stop the clock when runner goes OB.  "We never saw a time-out signal; y'all were covering the QB that ran OB."  (Funny...video show H's T/O signal clear as a bell.)  Please try to pay attention.  "OK."  No major issues after that.  Imagine if we'd had a real pre-game conference?

But, it makes me wonder if crews are talking to operators before each game.  How could we be this far into the season and still have PCOs trying to start and run a 40-second clock for the first scrimmage play after a punt?

Give them a radio.  Works great.  But only if chapter CO's.

No such thing as chapter COs in this area.  The referenced individuals were, I'm told, both school board members.  Probably why the HC didn't want to "insist" that they be there 60 minutes before game time.  I was quite polite when speaking to them, but I'm sure my body language prior to getting on the headset was pretty clear, even from the pressbox.

I've visited the press box before games where the clock operator doesn't come to the dressing room.  They act very surprised when I walk in and remind them they need to check in with the crew at least an hour before the game.  I've also though about giving them a radio on a different frequency and tell them they have to bring it to us after the game, so we get another chance to remind them to visit with the next crew before the game.  We have modern technology.  Let's use it.  If they are messing up, you can talk to them during a TO or when necessary to fix the time.

The clock operators are most time volunteers,  they don't get paid, and usually do it because no one else will.  I get the frustration, but also why do we want to be a bull in a china shop and p*** off every one from the supt down to the janitor in a small town, it does not help us in the over all scheme of things.  Let the coaches know the clock may not be right,  listen for someone to tell them clock is running down, and don't get too stirred up over something you can't control, unless you want to go all out and keep clock on field.  It will be all right.

I spent an entire 4Q getting teamed because of the play clock 2 years ago. A chapter member was on it.

I’m old.  What does “...getting teamed...” mean?
