Pass Interference Categories

The guy that runs our Back Judge meetings is also a college football official and he was telling us that on pass interference penalties they have to provide the type of pass interference, I don't remember the exact terms he used but they were along the lines of

DPI:
- Early Contact
- Playing Through the Back
- Grab and Restrict
- Arm Bar
- Cut Off
- Hook and Twist

OPI:
- Blocking beyond the expanded NZ
- Pick Play
- Creating Separation/Push Off
- Playing through the back

Personally, i'm trying to do this in my (HS) games. Is this something any of you do?

Oh, absolutely...very similar to holding. It's one thing to say what the penalty is, but what did the offender actually do?

As a WH on Friday nights, I don’t need all that information. I want to know
1. The foul
2. The number
4. The team.
I do think it is a great idea to be able to describe exactly what happened that caused the foul.

Where I do think this is a huge benefit to a crew is when you explain it to a coach if he has questions.  To me this gives a crew credibility and really makes you sound professional.

Coach we had a "Grab and Restrict" or a "Hook & Turn".

Coach we had a "Arm Bar"

Coach we had "Forcible Contact " to the head and neck area.

If I was a White Hat (which I am not) I would want my LOS officials really knowing these terms because that verbage can put out a lot of fires before they start.

Just my opinion

White hat doesn't need to know, but calling official absolutely should:

1) if you can't categorize it, it's not a foul
2) relaying info to coach/wing is much easier if you can just state the category, then move on to go officiate the next play

You used to be able to remember the categories by the mnemonic "PF CHANG".  Now, it's "P CHANG".

P = Playing through the back.
F = Faceguarding (not applicable).
C = Cutoff
H = Hook and Turn
A = Arm Bar
N = Not playing the ball with Early Contact
G = Grabbing the Arm / Holding

As a Referee I wanted to know exactly what he did for the simple reason of explaining the foul if the coach asked, this could be relayed to the wing official via O2O or otherwise without radios.

I also wanted to differentiate between a DPI and any other foul (ie. def holding)
" I don't make the rules coach!"
