Conference Crews?
« on: November 09, 2018, 07:47:17 AM »
Thanksgiving weekend, 11/24, there's several games involving SEC v ACC.
I've heard in the past the crew working the game is that of the visiting team.
i.e. ACC team is @the SEC team & the ACC crew is working the game.

Anyone know if that is still the case?

That is more typical than any other arrangement for non-conference contests, especially in this day and time, with a National Coordinator, the CFO, etc., which has tremendously synchronized and standardized NCAA officiating, and improved consistency, as compared to pre-2000.  There may be an occasional "neutral crew" for a contest, i.e., Conference C sends a crew to a contest between Conference A and Conference B.  That used to happen frequently, but those days are almost gone.  What is 100% gone is the "split crew," where the crew is made of folks from the officiating staffs of both conferences.

In 2007, the NCAA attempted to begin moving toward a nationwide staff, to eliminate the perception of bias by officials toward the institution within the conferences on whose staff they belonged.  The Big XII, Mountain West, and WAC formed a  "combined crew" with folks from each staff, and that crew worked assignments in all three conferences for 2007 and 2008.  A second crew was added in 2008.  For a variety of reasons, that specific program was dropped in 2009, although the Mountain West and The Big XII continued a program of sharing staff (which continues today).  The WAC and Conference USA also shared staffs in 2009, but that program, too, was dropped in 2010.  The Big XII and Mountain West continues a cooperative program (which also includes a feeder FCS and DII conferences).  (That may expand to another FBS staff in 2019.)
Other staffs may have cooperative programs, too, but I don't believe to the extent of the Big XII and MWC.

It depends on the contract between the two schools.  Typically the away team brings the officials from their conference.  However, that's not always the case.  Sometimes when a Non-Power5 conference goes to a Power 5 conference, there are times when the Power 5 conference will supply the officials.  All depends on what the schools agree to in their contract.

  • Without officials... it is only recess.

The home team conference supplies the officials in the UGA-GT rivalry
