ECO and their Attire?

Seeing what's common out there.
Round these parts:
ECO wears black docker-type pants, appropriate business casual shoes & his stripes - hat is optional but not encouraged.

BUT he brings with him either a gym bag to drop the shirt inside, or a normal jacket. Why? - the crew likes to leave the field together - sometimes it's needed with more hustle.  well, the ECO will take a long time getting through the crowd & it puts the crew in a bad position to stand there and wait for the ECO to make his way through a (potentially hostile) crowd.

On that notion, when the clock hits 0:00, the crew gets out of dodge while the ECO removes his stripes and drops it in the bag or just puts on the jacket and he can blend right in with the crowd.

Crew gets out of there safely & the ECO is not in harm's way should there be any hostility.

Certainly home management has law enforcement there if needed but these steps tend to reduce the need for their help.

In Wisconsin, ECO is neither required nor encouraged to wear a striped shirt.  Additionally, all of our ECOs have been doing it for 30 years and seldom make mistakes!

Ha! I’ve heard that more than one time. It was rather refreshing last Friday night when the ECO arrived. The first thing he said was “I’ve never run the clock in my life. What do I need to do?”

I'm assuming your ECO's are on the field?  That's unheard of in these parts, so they wear whatever they want.

SC: Khaki pants with solid color collared shirt. When I ECO, I research the teams and try to wear a neutral color.

I believe our assn requires stripes.  I say "believe" because I purposely don't ask.  Our clock operator wears black pants and a black polo with our assn logo on it.  I think that is much safer for the walk through the stands, especially if the outcome goes against the home team.  While I'm for safety for all ECOs, I'm particularly sensitive to ours because she is my sister-in-law.   

Also agree with getting the on-field officials off the field quickly.  We don't shake hands with either coach (unless one is standing right next to us and offers a hand) and we don't say much to each other.  At 0:00 we're jogging to the dressing room.  The only exception would be if something bad broke out before we got to 0:00.

Some guys bring the ECO down to the field if the clock malfunctions.  I used to do that, but found it works better to keep her up there and have the announcer give the time over the PA.

In TN the ECOs are officials and work on the field with remotes, they rarely are in the pressbox.  If they go to the pressbox  they are supposed to have an escort up and back down.

There's at least one school in MS experimenting with a remote :25 clock. BJ runs it from his position on the field...

I grew up in Chattanooga - a long time ago. Even then, they were on the sideline.
Some things never change.

In Alabama, most clocks are run from the press box. Our ECOs wear the full uniform.

ECO?  Clock operator?  In Ohio they are supplied by game management and are not part of the officiating crew.

If there is a visible play clock that also is controlled from the press box.  If there is not a visible play clock, the BJ keeps the 25 seconds.

Way back in the 1950-60s, when field clocks were something new, and rare, our Organization declared that our members would provide ECO services, and that has been the case since.  Members (Officials) are assigned as any other field official assignment, are members of the game crew, and as such wears a full uniform while attending to operating the game clock.

Our Clock Operators also serve as potential back-ups, should any of the field crew become unable to continue and the game clock would then be operated on the field.

The wisdom of those former members has served our chapter, and area football well, these 60-70 years.

We have a couple of those as well.  One works great. The other required the BJ to point the remote at a receiver in order to operate. We shut that one down.

Most of our ECO's are "civilians" provided by the home team in whatever they wear.

If the ECO is a paid official, they are in uniform.  They may also serve as an alternate if they are still active.
