Question re: Ole Miss v Miss St
« on: November 23, 2018, 08:20:43 AM »
Hi everyone. I don't work NCAA ball but do some JuCo stuff with college rules and I'm obviously not working any games with replay. But I scoured the rule book and the IR Case Book this morning and don't see any rules coverage for disallowing the TD here.

From what I could see there is no rule that states if a play is allowed to run with 0:00 on the clock it can then be "deleted" by IR. The rules talk a lot about *adding* time if the clock shows 0:00 and the previous play ended with time on the clock, but there's nothing about deleting a play entirely.

Play 164 from the IR Case Book talks about a similar situation. The play is allowed to run with 0:00 on the game clock at the end of the 2nd or 4th quarter. A TD is scored. The case book says this may be reviewed as it is an "egregious error" as it determines the end of a half. That makes sense. But the caveat there seems to imply that for it to fall under the "egregious error" category, the play *must* be at the end of a half.

Since this play was at the end of the 3rd quarter, I don't believe the "egregious error" provision applies as guided by the IR Case Book. And seeing no other rule in Rule 12 that allows for the review, I feel it may have been done in error.

I was watching the game at a bar with no audio but I saw Rogers Redding was the rules analyst for the broadcast and came on the air. Did he speak on this at all?

See case book play 160. The play had a direct competitive effect (team scored), so is subject to replay. If neither team scores, then IR probably would not have gotten involved.

It's interesting that Rogers Redding said that the video could be reviewed to be sure they ejected the right players and it appears as if that did not happen.
