Facemask Foul - Penalty Enforcement
« on: April 04, 2019, 05:54:22 AM »
3rd and 5 at the 50 yard line.  A is in shotgun formation with the QB about 7 yards off the line.  At the snap defensive back B27 is coming on a blitz and is unblocked reaching the scrambling QB at the A-35 but in an attempt to tackle him grabs his facemask, twists it, and starts pulling him toward the ground.  What is the result of each of these scenarios:

1.  QB is pulled to the ground and the ball is ruled dead at the A34.
2.  As he is going to the ground QB gets a screen pass off to A81 on the wing and the pass falls incomplete.
3.  As he is going to the ground QB gets a screen pass off to A81 on the wing and the pass is caught by A81 as he goes to the ground at the A40.
4.  As he is going to the ground QB gets a backward pass off to A25 who is immediately tackled at the A32.
It's easy to get the players, getting 'em to play together, that's the hard part. - Casey Stengel

I think RTP should apply for FM fouls even if the foul is committed immediately before the player becomes the passer. It does not matter in these situations as in each of them the basic spot will be the previous spot. A 1/10 B-35.

But, if in #3 A81 advances to B-40 and is downed there, you would then have A 1/10 B-25.

Because of 7-3-10 all personal fouls by B on completed pass plays are enforced from the end of the last run when it ends beyond the EZ.  So in Kalle's play he is correct that you would have 1/10 B-25.

I am just clarifying that a very similar rule exsists to RTP in the situation of a personal foul by B on a completed pass play.

Good clarification, because I keep missing that change :)

  • The rules are there if you need them.

And that's the good news.  Years ago, there was argument regarding a FFM foul against the BC before he threw a pass, since he wasn't a passer, yet.  So that couldn't be added to the end of the last run, yada, yada, yada.  I recall having that discussion with Redding many years ago, and he was clearly in favor of calling it RTP, and adding to the end of the last run.  So, a good rule change was made, and any personal foul could be added to the end of the last run.  So, now, we don't have to worry about whether we call it a RTP or FFM - the result is the same.  So, call it what it is.  A FMM before the pass - call it a FMM.  During the pass - call it a RTP.
