Helmet comes off...can player remain in the game?
« on: April 08, 2019, 01:47:51 PM »
1. First and 10 at the A-25. A14's pass is complete to A83 at the A-40. He carries the ball
to the B-45 where he fumbles. The ball is then recovered by A19 at the B-35. After the
pass was thrown, B76 took two steps and contacted A14 shoulder-to-shoulder, causing
A14's helmet to come off. It will be Team A's ball, first and 10 at the:

a. B-30, and A14 must go out (unless Team A uses a time out).
b. B-30, and A14 may stay in.
c. B-20, and A14 must go out (unless Team A uses a time out).
d. B-20, and A14 may stay in

What's your ruling, and, why do you say A14 can stay in or must go out?

C. RPS enforced from the end of the last run since the pass was complete, there was no change of team possession, and the run ended beyond the neutral zone. So the ball will be at the 20. A14 must leave because the foul was not a helmet foul. For a player to stay in the game, the foul that causes his helmet to come off must be a helmet related foul (HTF, FMM, TGT). AR 3-3-9-I covers this scenario.

  • The rules are there if you need them.

Agree.  Needs to be a helmet foul for him to stay in.

Agreed. If my helmet comes off because of a hit to the shoulder it's pretty obvious my helmet wasn't on tight enough. Most players don't properly tighten their helmets these days.
