When is enough, enough?

I began officiating in 2005 and started as a HL and later moved to LJ on my current crew (I am the U now).  Way back when I first started I had some young right out of college assistant coach just wearing me out on calls that were made and calls that were not made.  One of the chain crew members asked me how I took all of that verbal abuse.  I quickly explained that I had spent over two decades in law enforcement and while a co, I had a way to deal with individuals when they "crossed the line" (i.e. handcuff and arrest them). 

I further explained that as an official, I have a way to deal with coaches who "cross the line" and I gently pulled on my flag.  This young coach, for the most part, was just mouthing and most likely trying impress either his head coach or someone in the stands, so I let him rant and rant.  Of course, since I only communicated with the head coach (or his designated coordinators), I essentially ignored this mouthy coach.

At least until he eventually "crossed the line" and his comments became  vulgar and "personal."  The first time it was 15 against his team.  His head coach quickly ripped him a new one and I never heard another thing from him.  The next year, our crew had that same team and when I asked the HC where my friend was at (as I did not see him on the field during pre-game warmups), I learned that he was "no longer employed" with their school.

I guess my point is that we must remember (as another official stated earlier), let it e like water off of a duck's back!

I worked a game a couple weeks ago and we knew going into the game that the coach for one of the teams was notorious for being a total jerk towards officials and quite frankly has never had anything positive to say about our chapter over the past few years.  For some reason I find myself wanting to work for these types.  Probably because I'm a jarhead and don't mind conflict.  My HL is an Army Ranger so the two of us seem to enjoy it.  For me I enjoy the challenge of trying to "change" these coaches.  My HL is an over communicator.  If a mosquito bites a player on the other team he's going to relay that information to his coach.  I made the coach well aware of his over communication in the pregame and I used those exact words, "over communicator".  The coach was intense during the game but not overboard.  He yelled once about an ineligible downfield.  Supposedly he was 20 yard downfield (film showed 4 1/2 yards). He didn't like an ISH we called but the H got him to be silent when he told him 3 officials did not agree with his view of it being wrong.   With every call we made regardless of who it was on or how simple of a call it was, the H was right next to the coach communicating it.  As the game was nearing the end the coach went up to H and put his arm on around him and told him that the crew did a great job and that he appreciated us.  My H responded, "Coach, you are one intense dude but I like it."  Coach said, "Thanks, I do get a little bit loud and fired up.", and the H responded, "Well you're actually a DI_K, but I mean that in a complimentary way."  I kid you not, the coach took it and was very appreciative.  The next day I get an email from the coach and it was nothing but praises to us and he admitted that in the past he wouldn't have said such things and that he would be glad to use us in the future.

Of course he won.  However, I did get a telephone call from a Abilene area coach (not coaching there at the time) after he was quite BAD during a beat down.  He apologized and said we did an excellent job.  This is the RARE exception.
