To be clear, we only review and comment - we don't "grade." We let them know what they did well, things they can do better, and the things they simply did wrong, for the sole purpose of improvement. And that applies to rules and prescribed mechanics.
Arguably, grading is somewhat necessary for NCAA staffs (because the Coordinator has to have something objective to report to his Commissioner, when necessary). But, the way grading is (or has been) done and used by some - not all - organizations has only served to demoralize the staffs, and get them worrying about grades more than working the games effectively.
Even the smaller TASO chapters have more officials than most FBS staffs, which would make grading a gargantuan task for a TASO chapter, with uncertain benefit.
Let's use video - and "in person" - evaluations to help our guys get better. If we can leave politics and "buddy" favoritism out of the equation, the guys that want to get better will listen, get better, and rise to the top. Others that just occupy space will not. Our task is to teach and train our guys in the truly right ways to do things, and then recognize and reward those guys that pay attention and consistently employ those skills on the field.
