Annual Meeting On-Line
« on: June 04, 2020, 06:22:02 PM »
TASOs 2020 Annual Meeting (Football) will not be ‘face to face.’ Looks like it will be some combination of ‘webinar’ style, and just straight video production.
Disappointing, but, it will pretty much assure TASO avoids trouble with COVID issues (medical and legal).
We’ll adapt.
But, I really, really hope we get back to face to face meetings.

I started a poll, TASO has been mentioning online for years.

I think you lose something not being face to face and making new and seeing old friends.

Does anyone have information regarding Saturday’s virtual State meeting?  Was told a couple weeks ago TASO would be sending out registration and attendance information but so far I haven’t seen anything and there’s nothing on TASO’s website.

As a presenter, I am to be in Dallas on Friday to rehearse in the studio from which the sessions will be broadcast. I believe there will be three presentations on Saturday, with the ability for viewers to ask questions, although I’m not sure exactly how that will be done.  Other presentations will be offered in following weeks. All presentations will be recorded and made available for viewing online.
I do not know a schedule, but I assume the first presentation will begin Saturday morning.
That’s all I know.

Thank you but what about registering to attend?  No information found or available regarding registration. Is it possible we won’t have to register and will simply be provided links this week?

Registration should be opening this week.  My guess is tomorrow.   To add to Elvis, questions are expected to be asked by some type of chat feature.  Things may have changed when this part was discussed,  but the idea was to have someone monitor the questions and then present them to the instructor.

I think it should go online from now on. Questions don't have to be monitored real time necessarily, though you can do that way if you like. They can be answered in follow up fashion on the website in a FAQ format. It can even be utilized as study materials rather than a quick hit during the live session that people might miss (while talking) or forget about. Plus, the online session is recorded and can always be accessed.

Plus, I think the best part is that there are the potential for fewer mistakes than in live sessions. I do live session training; I like it. It is a great format. But for this many people and for summer months when people have other things on their mind -- really, who WANTS to be at a Regional Clinic or State Meeting when you can be pool side or at the lake or any one of 100 other activities (including watching a game in front of your home big screen -- except this year) -- online training is a much better idea. The time has come and, having to do it now, we no longer have an excuse. For people that join late, they have the resources to get trained properly.

I can't think of a single reason, other than easier access to the actual equipment we need to purchase (to see and try out new things) from the vendors, for a live clinic. The presenters may have to put in a little more work but aggregately, given that there are fewer of them, there should be fewer total man hours. Physical space costs way more than online resources. If you want to horse around with your buddies, there's this thing called a phone, your car, and a bar when it finally opens (or a golf course). Either or both are MUCH more fun than a clinic.

No disrespect intended,  but I favor in-person clinics.  There are always side conversations that are valuable that you can't get online.  The camaraderie is also big.  Getting to see the many friends I've met is great as well.

Anything that gets greater participation and more people to open the rule book should be supported, and that includes not making people travel hundreds of miles and have the unnecessary expense of gas and lodging.  Of course I support online meetings from now on.

Sad.
Its been a while, but there was a time when the State Meeting was something many, many folks across Texas anticipated every year. Take the family and travel on Thursday, and enjoy a Rangers game in the DFW area; take the kids to the Magic Time Machine in San Antonio; go to a Willie Nelson concert in the park in Austin; enjoy a quiet and private dinner with the wife at a really nice restaurant in Houston. Then play in the golf Tournament Friday morning. Then "Stump the Experts" on Friday evening. All the while, re-connecting with friends and colleagues from all across the state - and making new friends. Tellin' stories. Maybe even hangin' with some superstar officials like Tommy Bell or Red Cashion. Then gettin' into rules and mechanics all day on Saturday. Checkin' out the uniform/equipment vendors. Takin' the exam in the late afternoon. Then attending the awards dinner Saturday night. Then the last session or two on Sunday morning, and the "wrap up." Then headin' home.
We loved it. Don't know why it went away, but, sadly, those days seem to be gone.
No video screen can ever replace a personal handshake (or even a hug).

I don't know if you've been to one in a while, but they have changed dramatically.  We used to have a lot of fun.  Go with a group of guys, hit the training sessions, then the hospitality rooms and yak with guys all over.  That doesn't happen any longer, at least not at the ones I've been to the last few years.  It sure isn't the same.

Old age has put a halt to some of that.  The next generation isn't into socializing in person unfortunately.  They also aren't taking up officiating in large numbers either.

I was an attendee for, I don't know, 15 years before I first became a clinician. Then was a clinician for about 5 years before I got into FBS.  Years later, and following a 4-year retirement from officiating, I got bored and jumped back into TASO, and was blessed to be asked by TASO to rejoin the ranks of clinicians. Been a presenter at the last two Annual Meetings (and will be this Saturday, too), so, yeah, I know what they are like now. Correct. Nothing like they used to be. Usually early August, after we had a regional clinic in July that was Friday night, all day Saturday, and a half-day Sunday.  Back when we would get rules Sec-Ed Dave Nelson and WAC Super John Adams as clinicians at our regional. And, even after that we'd get Charles Stephenson (still Fri-Sat-Sun). And everybody had hard-copy rule books and mechanics manuals. Geez we learned a lot.
Very few seem willing to make that kind of commitment, any more. Yeah, it was a commitment, but, dang, it was fun.

In my opinion, the answer to these questions and comments is right in line with the entire shortage of officials issue.  As Jason mentioned, age has a lot to do with it.  Our (the older) generation had/has a strong desire to officiate and loves the basis of officiating.  This basis includes making the State meeting a 4 day social event.  Today's generation of younger individuals simply do not have this same drive to participate.  They don't want to socialize with groups outside of their age group.  This is why, locally, there seems to be less comrade even after a game where we used to look forward to sitting down after the game and having a cold beverage to recap and discuss all games.  That's pretty much gone too because, again, our newer generation of officials do not want to socialize it.  It would be great if all that could change and gravitate back to more social events.  Just not in the cards right now.

Registration opens Tuesday for an on-line inic Saturday morning? Why have we waited so long?

My thoughts were that TASO was waiting on the UIL to make their announcement.

Registration is now open.  It starts at 9:00 AM on Saturday.  At 9:30 AM Dr. Elza from UIL and Bryan Bunselmeyer from TAPPS will be speaking.  The link to register is on the TASO webiste.  https://taso.org/event/football/football-live-webinar/
Your TASO dues do not have be current.  You can still register for the clinic to get credit without having paid TASO dues.

I believe it is "virtual." According to their "virtual agenda" on their web site, it is going on right now.

According to the email that confirmed you registered it states that on Friday the 24th you will receive another email with login-credentials.

so, I know the one Saturday is 6 hours long.

Will it also be 6 hours for the guys that choose to do it later? That is a lot longer than the normal online clinic has been in the past. I see a battle in the local chapters to get all guys current for the playoffs.

Thinking about doing it Saturday, but that is a long day in front of a computer.

It is being recorded so both versions should be identical in length.
