There were 3 plans- A, B, C

A was open school with few alterations
B mixture of online and in-class learning, most likely alternating days
C online only

He chose B.  The NCHSAA board now must study the guidelines and come up with their plan for athletics.  There are two "key safety measures" that I think are going to kill it off.

Discontinue activities that bring together large groups
Limit nonessential visitors and activities involving external groups

  • Without officials... it is only recess.

And now fall sports are kicked back a month (at least...). First practices are now Sept 1.

I would be surprised if that doesn't get changed again.

Same number of games or did they just wipe out the first couple of games?

They're still kind of making it up as they go.  Playoffs were scheduled to begin 11/13.  We have delayed playoffs by one week before for hurricane damage in the East and wildfires in the West.  This would throw us about six weeks off.  All sorts of scenarios arise.  Locally we have some non-conference games that are big rivalries and huge money makers for the schools.  To just write them off has more of an impact than just a missed game.  It would effect the entire athletic budget for the schools.  Then you look at inequity in scheduling where if they just pick up at Week 7 on the schedule, who got to dodge who in the conference race?

They're still kind of making it up as they go.  Playoffs were scheduled to begin 11/13.  We have delayed playoffs by one week before for hurricane damage in the East and wildfires in the West.

I remember having a game that was close enough to the wildfires that we had all sorts of pregame warnings and comments about air quality breaks and all that jazz. We get to the field, and it's just like any other day no problems at all.... until the concession stand fired up the charcoal grill for burgers and dogs, and the almost no wind meant the smoke from the grill blanketed the field like a fog.

Somewhat ironic, but it smelled a lot better.

One thing I've gotten good at in recent months is not listening to vague rumors about ideas and possibilities about things we might consider perhaps looking into. When they've figured out what we're doing, let me know... until then... since I'm not involved in the decision, I don't feel the need to lose any sleep over it.

Although the final decision is yet to be made, NYSPSAA has pushed back starting the Fall sports season from 8/24 - 9/21, with a fall back target 03/01/21 should further delay be deemed necessary.

There are times, and circumstances in life we each have varying degrees of control over,  and times we have absolutely NONE.  Life is easier when we can accurately recognize the difference.

If they move it to 3/1/21, would they have enough officials to cover both baseball and football if they are playing at the same time.  I don't know what the exact numbers are here in Texas but in my chapter alone probably close to 40% of our umpires in baseball are also football officials.  I suppose you can go umpire the baseball game and then when that's done pack head over to the football field and start that.
