Houston ISD is online only until October. From their internal document: "HISD Athletics will tentatively schedule games for the fall, while awaiting detailed state guidance about high school sports from the University Scholastic League. Plans will be adjusted as COVID-19 conditions change."

I suspect Dallas and other large districts will follow similar plans. This has been in the works for a while -- 10 to 14 days minimum (30 days possibly) judging by the document I read. No way they threw this together this week.

With regard to spectators, NASCAR conducted their All Star Race last night with some 20,000 spectators in the stands at Bristol. The folks were spread out nicely, and were treated to an extremely entertaining set of races.
It can be done.

UIL's hand will be forced with regard to football. Dallas County just nixed in person classes and athletic participation of any kind until Sept. 8, which cancels the first 2 weeks of the season, and puts everyone 5 weeks behind. Even if UIL cancelled non-district, with districts ranging from 4 to 9 teams (UIL's own fault if you ask me) you still have a big mess on your hands. 3 weeks of practice (with not all school districts participating) and then start with what would be week 5, play up to 6 games. Districts with 8 or more teams can't get in a full round robin schedule.

That's BEST case scenario as of today.

I think UIL is just waiting for the inevitable and will a) kill football; b) allow cross country in some limited form but not start it until late Sept. or early Oct. and c) do something like allow tournament volleyball only or just kill it.

Note from UIL (Late June)
Nothing is complete. We reached out to the UIL who responded with a statement:

"Any plans regarding UIL activities and events for the 2020-21 school year will be dependent upon guidance from local and state authorities and will be released by UIL when more information is available. UIL will continue to work with state officials and monitor CDC and other federal guidance to determine any potential modifications for activities. Schools should take their local context into account and should follow all local and state requirements when considering UIL activities."

They will wait until the last minute or until the Governor kills it.

As of today (about an hour ago) the UIL plans on starting practice August 3 with teams playing a full schedule if they desire.  This could all change at any time.

My own personal thought is that the UIL will not be the "bad guy" in cancelling football.  Any games or season that get cancelled would be forced by the TEA or the Governor or local school districts that decide to opt out on their own.  That's just my own thought.  My first sentence is not my opinion but from a direct source.

UIL can't run forever. They control playoffs and of course the state championships. What will they do if, for example, Abilene, Tyler, and similar sized, along with a bunch of smaller area, schools continue to play? Or try to play? At some point, the UIL ED or AD has to make a decision. They may wait until the last minute, but they must decide something. Some 2A school is going to say, "we have a team, ready to play; everyone failed to show so they forfeited. Crown us 2020 State Champs."

What do you do then?

Who knows.  I find it odd that TAPPS has pushed their first games to Sept. 28.  It's odd because TAPPS has almost always followed whatever the UIL does.  They very rarely make a decision on anything without it also being a UIL rule.

I know baseball season has essentially started here.  We have a "high school" (no school people involved) tournament of some sort taking place here in my town in the morning.  I'm not participating.  I wonder if we might see some "non-school" football games if they end of cancelling the season?

I have a hard time seeing a district that has cancelled in person classes and athletics renting out their football seasons to make that work. (Or it being affordable if they do)

I should have updated my post.  After hearing about the tournament, as I was requested umpire it, I turned down the games, but I did drive by.  Nobody was at the high school field.  I then went out to the little league fields and it was a bunch of those youth level traveling teams with what looked like a thousand people.  It was packed no doubt.  They had 3 different fields going from 8:00 am and I don't know what time they ended.  I didn't stick around.  Drove by and went home.
