  • What on earth have I gotten myself into???
So, assuming we do have a HS football season, I am 50/50 if I want to work this season for the following reasons:

1. I am in the high risk category of developing severe complications should I get COVID being that I am a diabetic.

2. It is very difficult to socially distance when you are in a small booth with a lot of people, unless you are working at one of the "nicer" stadiums (Such as the berry center or Legacy Stadium)

3. Wearing a mask in 100+ degree weather for three plus hours in a booth with weak or no air conditioning is NOT happening. In other words, I'd have to take my mask off every so often to get some fresh air, not saying I would not wear a mask at all given number one

With that being said, will wait and see what happens and make a tough decision.

How does everyone else feel, regardless if you are a clock/scoreboard operator or an on field official?

My shoes are shined, and I’m ready for the opening coin toss. Let’s play. Those that don’t want to participate (players, officials, spectators) simply don’t have to. But those of us willing to accept whatever risk there may be are going to get this country moving again.
For the vast, vast majority of all people on the planet, COVID is nothing worse than the flu, and is certainly nothing close to a death sentence. Stop being afraid of your shadow, and get get back to life.

I risk my life a thousand times a day.  Covid is just one more risk to add to my plate.  Sure, it contagious and deadly if it hits the right person but stopping the Earth from rotating doesn't help the much more deadlier,  mental health issues.  If you have poor mental health,  you stand little chance of fighting off physical things.  Mental health should always take precedence.

For those of you throwing caution to the wind and not having to worry about anyone in your world that is at high risk, hats off to you, go get em.  For those of us with high risk people very close to us, don't disparage us for making a decision to sit it out.  My 85 year old parents would unlikely survive this virus, and I go visit with them weekly to help them out.  Also, a person in my household recently underwent chemo for stage 3 cancer and has a suppressed immune system.  Is working football for my 34th year really more important than risking their health and potentially their lives?  Hell no.  I just don't understand the cavalier attitude some of you guys have, damn the torpedoes, let's play football because it is more important than breathing.  Really?

What I fully expect to happen is the entire fall season for all sports gets cancelled by the UIL by the end of July.  I just don't see how we can safely have athletics when they are cancelling on-site classes.

Just my 2 cents fellas.

I would never think badly of someone for making a decision based on the well-being of their family and friends.  For those of us who don't really have to worry about that, it's great, let's go play football.  For those of us who do have to worry about that, make the decision that is the safest for you and your family.  I've known several officials over the years who have stepped away from the game because of decisions similar to this.  There's absolutely nothing wrong with it.  Do what you gotta do.

I hear you.  Yes, I really want to work football again this year.  But it's not more important than the people I love.

So good for you.  I think you're absolutely right.

I also agree that there's a very strong chance that there is no football this fall.

I deleted my post from earlier but it didn't take somehow.  I'm proud of the guys that are gung ho and can go out there without any worry.  At this stage, that's not me.  Let's hope things turn for the better very soon.  I want to be positive about all of this and it is a struggle because I want to be involved.  We are a strong group of guys so let's encourage those that can make it happen, IF it happens.

You are still the man.  I owe my career to you and a couple others on here who got me started many moons ago.  Don't want to state how long ago because that my reveal your age.  I still remember those $1.00 margaritas in whatever town that state meeting was in and we had like a hundred empty glasses by the time we got cut off.   aWaRd

To make an analogy...

TexDoc could not wear size 32 pants and Jason would look strange is a 48 coat.

One size will not fit all, same will go for the school districts!

And, I for one, will respect and have no ill thoughts whatsoever about anyone that, with the best information available, voluntarily chooses to not put himself/herself in a position of risk, whatever the real risk may be. Sadly, we don't fully know the real level of risk, either in contracting the virus, or in the effect the virus will have on any particular individual. Clearly, the risk and effects vary per individual. With each day that passes, we see increasing percentages of folks that contract the virus, and increasing percentages of folks that fully recover from the virus. In many areas, the recoveries are outdistancing the infections. And, in analyzing the recoveries, a high percentage of those felt very little effect.
Of course. There are folks that are at higher risk of both contraction, and of suffering major ill effects (sadly, including death). The medical professionals can tell you what those risk factors may be. I don't know those, but you can bet smoking is a major factor. Obviously, age is a factor, too, gauged by the average age of fatalities attributed to COVID-19.
The biggest issue in this pandemic is not the disease itself, but the politicization of it. On one extreme, you have those that would force all persons to avoid any interaction with other persons, whatsoever, until such time as some politician declared the world/country to be safe - by their standard, whatever that might be. On the other extreme, there are those that think no preventive measures are necessary, period, and they should be able to carry on with no consideration for others (or themselves), whatsoever. In the middle - which is a huge and majority portion of the population - are those that are willing to exercise reasonable and sensible precautions to help minimize the risk of exposure (either giving or receiving the virus), while being allowed to choose to accept the risk, and carry on life as it was known before C19. They simply want to be able to make that choice for themselves, individually, and as discrete communities. What is best for New York, Houston, LA, Miami, etc., is not necessarily needed for Idalou, Texas. Let the leaders of those communities - accountable to the citizens of those communities - make those choices for themselves. If a densely populated community wants to make students stay home for the next two years, let them make that choice. But, if small communities want to put sanitization protocols in place, and let kids return to school in September, let them make that choice. And extend that to extracurricular activities. If a number of communities return to school, and choose to field football teams, let them play. There may be some drastic reformations of districts and/or divisions, but give the students their chance to get the education they deserve, and participate in athletics, etc., for which they only get (maximum) four years of their lives to enjoy.
COVID-19 is not an automatic death sentence. And, by all accounts, for the vast, vast majority of folks, it has no more effect than the "common cold."
Let's get back to life.
Y'all know how I stand. This will be my final expression on the issue. Thank you for 'listening.' And I hope all of you stay safe and healthy, no matter what happens.

The problem now is going to be numbers.

First we have to deal with the real problem: median age in general. I'd estimate in our chapter, median age is somewhere in the late 40s. For crew chiefs, its actually a decade more than that. I know of one so far that's bailed due to issues spoken in Doc's post. There WILL be more -- possibly many more. I'd estimate as many as 25 percent of just crew chiefs. The numbers, as far as age goes, just don't lie here. If you're over 80 and get this you're toast. If you're over 60, its better but not fun. There's a huge spike around the number 80 but that doesn't mean under 80, especially 50-79 (where have I heard that before??) can ignore it completely. THAT is what people are looking at.

Second, my crew is already starting to bail. My LJ has told me he's out; my HL is talking to his wife's doc, and I'd bet money my BJ will be doing the same even though I haven't talked to him. The HL and BJ have wives with health issues. We are 7 man, but if I lose those 3 I'm down to 4 with no good options because other crews will be in similar boats. It goes without saying that if we do work this year, it won't be with 7 officials (until maybe playoffs), but I'm not altogether sure I'm in, because...

Finally, I'm probably the least one on here that's going to give in to fear but dad-gum-it, is this sport really worth the risk? Is 100-150 a night worth it? I work for myself and have a high deductible plan so I'm out a lot of money if I get sick. I agree that the risk is small -- probably very small. But the thing is that I've only had the flu once, maybe twice in my life. I'm not worried about getting that. I'm not worried about car accidents or injuries on the field. However, I just don't know how I would respond to being exposed to this. If we're talking living my life like normal, I'm willing to accept certain risks but honestly, adding whatever increased risks there are with a football field (no matter how small) may not be worth it.

My point is that even though I'm not high risk, I can't guarantee I'm going to be on the field if there are games.

I guess I could call myself lucky that my area is not very populated, and appears to be at a much lower risk than Dallas, Houston, etc. With this only being my second year, I think a year off would severely hurt my mechanics and rules application. But I definitely understand those who are in more populated areas being concerned. Good luck to everyone. Stay safe.
