Jersey # change?
« on: September 11, 2020, 12:53:58 PM »
Team A with 12 players has one get hurt,  A32. Team A coach has player A60 come off the field, change jerseys with injured player A32 and sends him back in. Is this legal and does the coach need to call a time out and report it to ref if so?

Thanks Calhoun! Can you point me in the right direction in rule book where this would be covered?

1 - Yes it is Legal
2 - He would only need to call a time out if he was in jeopardy of delaying the game.
3 - No, He does not have to report this situation to the Ref.

Thanks.

I asked because we had this happen and the coach said that when A60 left the field he withdrew from the play and could not return as the substitute under the rule. I see the rule he is referring to but wasn't sure he's interpreting it correctly.

It is legal. The only reason a coach would need to report this to the officials would be if A32 had been ejected from the game and changed his jersey with A60. Without a notification, this could result in a flag for IP that would then need to be picked up.

Changing jersey numbers in the course of the game used to be quite common -- at least in NJ.  If a team wanted to use their tight end, for example, as the long snapper, they'd often change him his using to an ineligible number.  I suppose this was before the rules allowing numbering exceptions.

He is not returning as a substitute the player that came in for #32 is the substitute and the other player by definition just walked off to get the new jersey and returned.  I look at it as the same as if his shoe came off and landed off the field out of bounds and he went over, out of bounds in the team box,  and picked up the shoe and put it on ands then came back on the field.  No substitution was made for him so that part is legal. As everyone else has said the changing of the jersey # is no problem as long as they dont delay the game.
