Clarification of rule 8-2
« on: September 12, 2020, 04:36:46 PM »
During the game, in the 2nd quarter,  2nd and 8- "A" completes (legal) a long pass which is caught by "A81" and results in a touchdown (score). During the play and before the score, "B" commits a personal foul (or any foul for that matter).  As I understand this rule, the score stands, and "A" has the option accepting the score AND either accepting the yardage on the try (half the distance) OR accepting the score, attempt the TRY AND have the penalty yardage assessed on the next kickoff.  If I am understanding this rule why would "A" decline the penalty? (8-2), (since a team always has the option to accept or decline the penalty)  ^TD

They shouldn't and a good R won't let them.  "Coach you want the 15 on the try or the kickoff?"  Most are going to take it on the kickoff as the try is only going to move to the 1 1/2 yard line and most kickers like to keep it where it is.  Now if it is a situation where A is going to want to go for two, they're likely to take it on the try.

Ok follow up question from 8-2a, regarding 8-5. Maybe I am over thinking this but the rule says "if either team commits and USC or NPF foul during a down in which a touchdown is scored, the opponent may accept the Penalty and choose enforcement of the Penalty on a: the try, b: subsequent kick off."  Since possession of a live ball in the opponents end zone is always a touchdown  Rule 8-1, Does rule 8-5 mean that if "A" commits a foul does the Score remain on the board? e.g during the play a A-47 Blocks B-35 in the back while A-81 scores. ? hEaDbAnG

USC or non-player fouls are live ball fouls treated as dead ball fouls, which means the results of the play stand and the down advances. If A scores and commits one such foul, the play and points stand and the the penalty is enforced during the subsequent dead ball period.

A block in the back is not an unsportsmanlike or non-player foul and would not fall under this rule. This is a live ball foul enforced using the all but one principle -- here the spot of the foul is behind the basic spot (goal line, because touchdown) and it is enforced from there, replay the down, score does NOT count.
