New and confused question..
« on: October 08, 2020, 10:21:57 AM »
While reviewing material "some where true false question" to better understand the rules on Free Kicks I found a question that has me confused and appears to be false.  Here is it... "Team K executes an on-side kick from their 40. The ball is rolling along the ground at K's 48, where team R player steps into the neutral zone to recover the kick. A team K players use both open palms to push team R player backward and away from the ball... this is a foul by K that results in a 10-yard penalty that team R may have enforced from the dead-ball spot where R recovered the kick."  ??  Any comments :sTiR:

Look at 9-3-8.
10 yard penalty from the previous spot.

True statement. Two rules come into play:

9-3-7:
ART. 7 ... No member of the kicking team shall initiate contact to (block) an opponent on a free kick until:

a. The legal kick has traveled 10 yards;

b. The kicking team is eligible to recover a free-kicked ball; or

c. The receiving team initiates a block within the neutral zone.

10-4-2

EXCEPTION:The basic spot may, at the option of the offended team, be the succeeding spot for fouls by K during a legal free or scrimmage kick down (other than kick catch interference) prior to the end of the kick when K will not be next to put the ball in play.

I was pretty sure I understood 9-3-7, my confusion is the penalty enforcement. From the response and reading the rule wouldn't "R" have the option of having the ball re-kicked with penalty yardage marked off  OR does "R" get the yardage marked FROM the spot of the foul OR where "R" actually recovered the ball?  I noticed the word "MAY" in the question, hence my questions.

"MAY"

Exactly- they may.  The may also elect other enforcement options but there is nothing false about the statement/question

FYI, if the situation dictated an onside kick, R's best choice would be to choose the enforcement spot where the kick had ended with R in possession. Previous spot enforcement would only allow K to again try to recover an onside kick.
